Tom Clements is a future head coach someday IMO.

Agree about the staff. One coach to look out for, IMO, is Ben McAdoo. He's done wonders with an immature Finley. He's also done pretty well with getting Quarless ready, considering he is a rookie.

And btw, Jackson is better than Grant and Bishop is better than Barnett.

I could agree with you on Bishop vs. Barnett, but if there is one thing we've learned this season it's that Jackson is NOT as good as Grant.

I don't think Mike is coach of the year. Tomlin has done a nice job, so has Bellicheck.

McCarthy has taken HUGE blows all season long because of al lthe injuries, and he has been able to keep up the intensity in the locker room and on the field. It doesn't always look like it, but honestly they are doing VERY well for how much adversity the injuries have placed them in when compared to what we thought this season would be like. It would have been easy to lay down and call it a season, but he has risen up to the challenge, and IMO brought the team along with him.

Don't blame every little thing on McCarthy (not meaning to imply you do Chutzpah) and claim he be fired every time something goes wrong.

"all_about_da_packers" wrote:

If you were in fact not being sarcastic, thank you. I have only two serious complaints about McCarthy; his play calling and leadership skills, or lack there of.

I think mm and/or his staff is not able to get the best out of their players until their jobs are in serious jeopardy. Take last year as an example. The Packers go 4-4 after losing to 0-7 Tampa Bay and fans are calling for McCarthys head. After that game the team goes 7-1 down the stretch and secures a playoff berth. Although riddled with injury on both sides on the ball, he is in a similar situation this year.

IMO McCarthy's play calling and leadership skills leave a lot to be desired. Rodgers ongoing poor performance on the field has me questioning if he has full control of his players. Rodgers is McCarthys project just as Favre was Holmgrens project. I am puzzled by McCarthys inability to address continuing shortcomings in Rodgers play throughout this season. Since preseason Rodgers mechanics have deteriorated and continue to seemingly go unaddressed. This could be an indication, IMO, that McCarthy may not have full control over his players. If Favre had been playing this poorly in 1998, after 2 MVPs and 2 SBs, Holmgren, being the quality leader he is, still would have whipped his sorry ass into shape. I find McCarthys inability, or unwillingness, to do the same is troubling.

For all the criticism I give McCarthy, I do think he does many things very well. McCarthy is very good at creating favorable match ups, developing young players, and, as you pointed out, HIRING a strong supporting cast of coaches. His development talents, also evident in Rodgers, are best demonstrated in Flinn who is definitely out playing his natural talent. The match ups McCarthy creates on the field, consistently, are brilliant and I wish I could gain a deeper understanding as to how he is able to accomplish this week after week, with such success. Poor leadership and over predictability are holding McCarthy back as a HC, and IMO will untimely prevent him from getting to a Superbowl.

Replacing the last of Shermans holdovers, regardless of the teams collective performance, is the final step to be taken before talks of ousting McCarthy from Green Bay can be discussed in any seriousness. IMO McCarthy needs a strong OC to have a serious shot at long-term success.

I wasn't being sarcastic, you do raise valid points. More and more, lately, I'm beginning to scratch my head with some of McCarthy's playcalling... specifically his lack of running and insistence on throwing the ball when teams are inviting him to run. I also think this results in too much of a load being put on Rodgers, he is our star QB not some miracle working that can consistently turn nothing into something. And the struggles of Rodgers in regards to his fundamentals is certainly concerning.

I'm not so sure I see any real deficiencies in McCarthy's leadership, but then again I can't say I've been critically analyzing his leadership skills. I take issue with people who, for instance, blame all pass incompletions on McCarthy... because that overlooks the fact that players are required to execute and do not always do so. I'm not saying McCarthy is not at fault in those situations, but exercising some pause and thought before going after McCarthy might be worthwhile.

You also raise another interesting point... someone mentioned the past few Superbowl winners (at least last 3 - Steelers, Colts, and Saints - from my immediate recollection) had head coaches who were not at all involved in any playcalling. Maybe stepping back will allow McCarthy to have a greater pulse and oversight of his team... but frankly it's hard for me to suggest dramatic changes like that right now because we're doing alright at 5-3.

That is not exactly what I had in mind. I think he does the majority of the offensive work, with Philbin having a very "small" role comparatively. A stronger presence at OC might help distribute the work more evenly.

If the injuries we've sustained had occurred back in the Mike Sherman years, we'd have been toast. We would not have been competitive after losing this many players of this quality. Heck, we would have been in serious trouble just from not having Al Harris at the beginning of the season.

The fact that the team has been competitive week in and week out, despite all of the injuries, speaks a lot to the job McCarthy and the coaches have done to prepare the guys to play.

And the fact that McCarthy has had the guys to prepare in the first place (Bishop, etc) says a lot about the job that Ted Thompson has done stocking the team. A lot of our backups (Chillar, Bishop, etc) could be starters on other teams.

Yeah, neither of them have been perfect. I've been critical of Ted Thompson in the past for not being more involved in the FA market, but after this year I'm giving Ted Thompson a pass. And yeah, I'm not thrilled with the offense to this point, but Mike has 8 more games (and a 2-week bye coming up) to get things working smoothly for the playoffs.

There are a lot of teams out there who are sitting with worse records that haven't had to field back-ups week after week like the Packers have. Based on the one stat that counts most--wins/losses, and the fact that the Packers are leading their division--frankly, I think McCarthy deserves consideration for Coach of the Year and I think Ted Thompson deserves consideration for GM of the year.

I agree, I'd just like to see the offense display a little more consistency. I think the defense has pulled us through all year. Just my opinion.
