I was surprised to find this among Jim Trotter's ten predictions for the second half of the season:

3. Packers coach Mike McCarthy won't get much consideration for Coach of the Year, but he should.

McCarthy, arguably, has done his finest work since arriving in Green Bay in 2006. He started the season without injured secondary starters Al Harris (knee) and Atari Bigby (ankle), then lost running back Ryan Grant, linebacker Nick Barnett (wrist), tight end Jermichael Finley (knee) and safety Morgan Burnett (knee) to season-ending injuries. Both of his lines have been banged up and outside linebacker Clay Matthews has been fighting a hamstring injury, still the Packers are 5-3 and leading the NFC North.

They have not been the juggernaut we all expected, but they appear to have developed some grit that was missing earlier in the year when they lost three of their first six games by a field goal each. The past two weeks, however, they beat a desperate Minnesota team by four and halted the Jets' five-game winning streak despite failing to score a touchdown.

They appear to be building momentum similar to last year, when they started 4-4 and rallied to win seven of their final eight. If the Packers have similar success this year, McCarthy should be strongly considered for Coach of the Year. More likely, he'll be overshadowed by Kansas City's Todd Haley, St. Louis' Steve Spagnuolo and Tampa Bay's Raheem Morris, each of whom has turned a projected doormat into midseason contenders. They deserve the recognition, but so does McCarthy.

He should get The Coach Of The Year Award just because of his challenge flag talents, and the fake field goal call.

Serious: When the Paackers roll on to 11 wins and go very deep... he will be the Coach of the year.

Lets wait and see how the season plays out. He's a candidate if the Packers win the division and a playoff game. Considering the injuries, it's tough to keep things together like he has done the last three weeks IMO. I know they loss to Miami, but I saw a lot of quality signs in that game from McCarthy.

Right now, it's too early to tell. I would look at Steve Spagnoulo and Bill Belichick as possible candidates.

I like McCarthy, but he has not done a great job at all this year. Dom Capers has saved his ass. Our worst injuries are on Defense. McCarthy controls the offense which has been a MAJOR disappointment this year, (IMO). His expertise is specifically in the passing game, which again, I believe has not reached its potential yet (not even on the same level as last year).

Capers gets the most out of his players. I'm not sure we can say the same thing about McCarthy. Go ahead and call me a hater, but I like to see some arguments why he deserves this.

If there was a Coordinator of the Year award, Dom Capers would be a candidate at this point. But there is only Coach of the Year, so the head coaches get credit for their coordinators' accomplishments. (By the way, Capers won Coach of the Year with the Panthers back in 1996.)

I think it is a stretch to call McCarthy a candidate for the award. It's been an up-and-down season for the Packers. He does seem to have the respect of his players, though, in spite of some tough times, and I give him credit for that.

Porky, they don't take playoff games into account for this award. Like all of these awards, the voting is done at the end of the regular season.

When his team plays well consistently throughout the season, he'll be a candidate. And btw, Jackson is better than Grant and Bishop is better than Barnett. Peprah may not be better than Burnett, but he's playing lights out. AND he's not a rookie. We lost some guys on the DL, but guys are stepping up. Finley was a loss, but we've got depth there too.
When his offense can regularly show up for a full 60 minutes, then I'll consider his ass.
