I still don't think we need special bullying laws. Anything that can possibly fall under the category of "bullying" is already outlawed under innumerable other statues on the books.

legal marriage DOES bestow specific rights and benefits upon people.

I don't think any of the benefits bestowed by legal marriage (with the possible exception of tax advantages) are legally mandated. They are simply granted by private organizations at their own discretion.

Another link I found spat out a figure of ~1200 federal and ~400 state "special privileges" allowed to legally married couples, however it was far too vauge for my liking and the source was somewhat slanted too.

But yes, getting back on subject, I agree with you 100% here.

What makes you think it's a politically driven thing, Formo? I guess I've been out of the loop. Have politicians been pushing the issue hard?

Regardless, I agree with 4PackGirl. It doesn't matter where the discussion is originating, as long as it's being discussed. I find it sad that it even has to be discussed, honestly. I will never understand the anti-gay mentality.

"Porforis" wrote:

As I outlined in my previous post but wanted to mention in more specificity, the "anti-gay mentality" is discrimination, plain and simple. The catch is, have any sort of "undesirable" or "alternative" traits such as skin problems, obesity, very short/tall stature, odd voice, etc etc etc and you will get tons of shit in high school. The wonderful thing is, once you get out into the adult world, the vast majority of people STOP CARING about things that do not affect them.

As for bullying in high school (again wanting to make a distinction between bullying, criminal harassment and assault), regrettable but constructive in the long run if the abusee wants to be constructive about it. Harassment and assault? Has no place in a school or anywhere else.

I agree with you to a certain extent. When the story about that college kid who killed himself over the sex tape emerged, my first thought was that bullying (or in this case, secret videotaping) was NOT the issue. The real issue was that he felt he could not go on with his life being revealed so graphically as a homosexual. He hadn't told his parents. That is the society that homosexuals live in.

Yeah, but isn't that more an extreme expression of the prudishness our society has towards sex in general?

When I was in microbiology this summer, my professor told a story about a girl in a previous cycle who stumbled across a cell in her oral swab wet-mount slide that she couldn't identify. She called the professor over, who looked into her microscope, recognized the cell instantly, and said aloud, "Oh, that's a human sperm cell."

The girl dropped the class.

Why? As my girlfriend pointed out, the student should have been proud that it was obvious she was getting some. But our culture attaches shame to sex.

I always say people should never do anything in private they'd be ashamed to have mentioned in public, and that applies to sex too.

i have a best friend who is gay & a child who has been bullied. this is near & dear to my heart. you can think it's some sort of political hot button issue if you want. bottom line is i'm thrilled that these issues are being discussed. doesn't matter to me why & it really shouldn't matter to anyone else why. to effect change, discussion must take place, & then action will follow.

and for the complete ahole who wrote these kids are 'taking the easy way out', you're an idiot!

"4PackGirl" wrote:

Thanks, I'm the a-hole.. 🙂 I didn't post what I wrote for the simple reason that my sister and my cousin are gay and I knew they would completely misunderstand my post.

Those kids DID take the easy way out. I'm sorry, but I can not express pity for someone who chooses that route. It's a Darwin booth award type thing for me.

This IS a political hot button.. at least here in Minnesota. This MNDaily article sums it up pretty well.  If you think that these politicians won't jump on this issue and use it as puppet strings attached to the masses to pull for votes, you are sorely naive.

What makes you think it's a politically driven thing, Formo? I guess I've been out of the loop. Have politicians been pushing the issue hard?

It does need to be discussed and addressed, I agree. But using these homosexual kids as martyrs or as 'poster children' to stop the bullying pisses me off.

I got into it with someone about bullying. She was proclaiming that gays can't help who they are and all the stigma that surrounds their lifestyle and choices to hide it (all of which can be argued with legitimate research) and that it's especially wrong that they get bullied so much. She COMPLETELY ignored the rest of these bully's victims, like myself, Cheesey and Porf. I was outraged... Like I choose to be goofy looking and poor growing up.

It's the FAVORITISM of the gays being bullied that outrages me. This isn't an anti-gay thing at all.

You once again hit the nail on the head, Formo. So many of us were bullied. It's something that SHOULD have been addressed LONG ago. Bullying PERIOD.
I was terrified to even tell anyone what was happening to me, for fear of retaliation by those bullying me. And it WOULD have happened.
Is it sad that gays are picked on? Sure. But no worse then what i went through. Kids WILL pick on anyone they think they can get away with. Doesn't matter the reason why, they are just JERKS.
I was even bullied by TEACHERS because of the religion my family was at the time.

so let me get this straight...you're angry because you were bullied & nobody did anything about it. but now a discussion is taking place not only because of gay kids being bullied but because MANY kids are being bullied & you're still angry? that's just sad, selfish, & incredibly immature. the lack of compassion astounds me.

i figured you were the one who wrote the fb thing, formo. how can you say an 11 year old who killed himself that he took the easy way out? his brain hasn't even formed enough to fully understand the ramifications of his actions. he just knows he's hurting, nobody could stop the hurting & pain, nobody cared, he couldn't see any end in sight so he ended his life. the 11 year old wasn't gay, btw.

Suicide doesn't bother me. I have a personal theory that a lot of people who commit suicide in their teen and early adult years are the same people who would have died in infancy and early childhood before the advent of modern medicine. Faulty genes find ways to weed themselves out of the gene pool. It's a natural and expected effect of sexual reproduction. Civilization seems hellbent on flouting the dictates of natural selection, but it usually finds a way to rear its head anyway. The problem is the more clever we get at evading it, the more violent it becomes in asserting dominance.

You missed my point, but that's ok. Nothing I can say can elaborate it better than how I already stated. You just want to read more into it than what the truth is.

don't be givin me the eye roll buddy or i will kick your ass!! ;)

i get what you're saying, i really do. in fact, when i first heard the news reports of the gay suicides, i thought 'hey - what about the kids who are being bullied for no reason'. then i realized that i was being kinda selfish. in the end, i'm grateful that by whatever means it took, bullying is being discussed in a broad spectrum. i don't think it should be a political discussion at all. anytime politics gets involved with a serious issue, that issue is lost in the mix.
