McCarthy's offense lacks originality of any kind. period.

Rodgers threw for 300+ yards, and the team was a holding penalty away from 24 points against one of the better front 7s in football.

If you're at the 30, it's 3-22 so you run a draw to set up a field goal... the rb breaks one for a 1st down the fans cheer on a "brilliant play call," if he gets 3 yards, "man the coach is a moron!" The result isn't necessarily indicative of how good/bad a play call was.

The team had MYRIAD other opportunities to win this game and blew it...play calling would be about 87th on my list of reasons why they lost.

Most of the drives were 7 minutes long (after they abandoned the run). Perhaps with more effective play calling the offense could move more quickly down the field.

what the hell does 'more effective play calling' mean?!? What would you do differently? Run more against a team that's averaging 1.8 yards/attempt this year? The team utilized their weapons effectively - jones and driver were given opportunities to get YAC, Finley's size exploited the D, they used play action effectively even w/ out much of a run game - they put up almost 400 yards of offense...

This is the NFL, not Oregon vs. Billy Bob State College - you don't put up 800 yards of offense against every team! 18 penalties, dropped pics, pics called back due to penalty...THESE were factors that cost the team the game!

The only thing I'm "freaking out" about is Mike McCarthy's deplorable decisions in the final two minutes. If there's anyone I want fired, it's our offensive-line coaching staff. And I'm still irritated with the front office that Clifton and Tauscher went into this season as our designated starters.

I will agree with that. Whoever was advising MM to throw the flag needs a pink slip, and M.M. needs to wear a dunce cap for that. It was clearly a fumble and they had plenty of time to see that the defender was in bounds...they just wasted 45 seconds and a time out out of wishful thinking.

Oh get off the challenge. McCarthy only challenged the play on a prayer. He knew all the while it was in bounds.

The real blunder was not them letting score.

McCarthy's play calling in the first half of every game does usually leaves a lot to be desired...

Its this hyper-reactive discourse that makes certain fans absolutely intolerable.

What exactly makes you think you're qualified to assess McCarthy's playcalling? Play a lot of Madden? Jesus effin Christ. This is just insufferable. It really is. To people who make a LIVING coaching and/or analyzing football Green Bay's offense is a force to be reckoned with, personnel and strategy wise.

It's a multiple package offense predicated on motion, creating mismatches presnap, using compression sets to free up receivers ... the list goes on. Rodgers' ability to snap and throw doesn't come solely from his blessed talents, but from a system that employs complex route combinations, presnap reads, and post-snap route changes. The system itself is also fantastic in fitting with players' best attributes. Typically when Green Bay uses a 3 WR set James Jones lines up at flanker, a position he's well suited for. Driver goes to the slot where he fits perfectly -- great hands, toughness, and run-after-the-catch ability. Jennings lines up a split end, matching his speed and field-stretching ability. The complexities of the offense are tailored to this. I won't pretend to be an offensive expert -- I'm far from it. But it's not difficult to PERCEIVE the nuances of the system and it's absolutely appropriate to defer to those WITH expertise (and those people pretty much unanimously agree that the offense is legit).

I don't care whose feathers I ruffle -- you are simply an ignorant person.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

This is why I respect you. That and the fact that you are an outlandishly intelligent person who often kicks my ass in debate (partly because I go online almost exclusively for entertainment and can't be arsed to spend hours formulating cogent, well-reasoned arguments). ;)

I don't know how we can really fault Mike McCarthy's playcalling overall. This offense's output has been quite impressive considering its lack of a running game. I still think he locks up at key moments, though. His stubbornness in the face of overwhelming odds and evidence is both impressive and infuriating.
