The point of play action is to get the LBs / DBs to bite.

In the West Coast Offense - or its multiple versions - short passes function similar to the running game: three-to-five yard gains. This type of ball-movement should also leave possibilities for making LBs / DBs bite, albeit with different routes, such as those containing double moves, or having Rodgers pump fake.

I guess what I am trying to say is that having a running game would not have made the difference between a win and a loss tonight.

Nor any other night when the passing game is as effective as it was. And trust me, we can win 9-10 games on passing alone if we don't have 18 penalties. Easily.

You know what I just read, and it seems very fitting:

The final play, where the Packers are throwing back and forth on the return, the refs ran out of flags and had to resort to throwing their hats.

Poetic.

If the refs weren't allowed to pick flags up, they would have been completely naked. Thank god they pick flags up after the play!

Sure it could have made a difference. By throwing the ball 45 times the risk of getting called for holding, false starts, ect is greater. Especially when the majority of those calls were caused by peppers. By running the ball you can take the pass rusher out of the game in this case peppers.

When did they change the rules to where you couldn't be called for a hold or false start on a running play? If we would have ran the ball 30 times and gotten 120 yards, don't you think we would have still thrown the ball about 15-20 times? Not exactly much of any difference in play count. Valid point in regards to peppers, but there's zero chance there would have been more than 3 less hold/false starts. Zero.

And besides, you're not arguing the value of a running game there as much as the lack of discipline on the part of our line on passing downs.

I'm not sure how.

You can get called on holding, false starts, and delayed reactions on running also, because the ball still has to be snapped and guys on the O-line still have to sustain blocks.

You can take Peppers out of some plays by running more - although even that would not seem possible today because Peppers seemed to be living in our backfield today.
