Sure it could have made a difference. By throwing the ball 45 times the risk of getting called for holding, false starts, ect is greater. Especially when the majority of those calls were caused by peppers. By running the ball you can take the pass rusher out of the game in this case peppers.

You can get called on holding, false starts, and delayed reactions on running also, because the ball still has to be snapped and guys on the O-line still have to sustain blocks.

You can take Peppers out of some plays by running more - although even that would not seem possible today because Peppers seemed to be living in our backfield today.
