He (and sadly practically all celebs) break news on twitter.

Eh. I don't know if it's that sad. Twitter allows celebs, Grant included, some control over their own message. The team doesn't control the message and their agent doesn't control the message, they do. Obviously this can go too far when idiots around the league are posting during games, or whatever, but for the most part I think it is a positive thing in terms of players claiming their agency to control their own message.

Anyway, as far as Grant getting his foot amputated, hopefully they will build him stronger and faster than before. They have the technology!

Twitter can also = quotes from a horses ass. Depends on the twit.

The problem is it's almost impossible, at times, to determine the intent of a Twit. They're limited to 40 characters so they're extremely brief and rarely articulate or coherent. Sarcasm and humor are much better conveyed with the human voice than by txt spk. Abbreviations like "lol" are opaque and difficult to decipher: do they indicate a smirk, mild amusement, a guffaw of hilarity, or vague sarcasm?

The human experience boiled down to one liners.

This brings up a pet peeve of mine. If someone sends something funny and puts LOL at the end. It is like someone who laughs a little to hard at his own jokes. LOL is supposed to be a response to humor, not an indicator. If you need to tell someone it is funny, you are wrong. LOL.

That was supposed to be "140 characters," not 40 characters.

But I agree. If you have to put "LOL" after a sentence to indicate it's funny, then it's clearly not funny. Humor should be derived from the content of the words themselves combined with the context in which they are said or written, not from some tag appended to the words in an attempt to convey intent.

But it solves a problem that you hate so much.

It's pretty hard to know when someone's using irony or not online. Putting "lol" after a sentence usually removes all doubt.

How many times have you told a joke, smiled or chuckled halfway through your story or at the end of your recount? Lol is just the text version of that. Also, I don't think most people actually lol when they lol. I've ROFLd before with a complete straight face in real life sitting at my computer. I would think many are the same.

That's actually my point, TheEngineer. It's impossible to know how much significance to ascribe to a "haha" or a "lol" or a "ROFL." Just yesterday I got a text from a girl in my immunology class that started with "hahaha," yet there wasn't even a smirk on her face as she sent it. So what was the point of the "hahaha"? Those tags don't actually do anything to elucidate sarcasm or irony or humor. If anything, they're all the more confusing.

Words are confusing. That's part of what makes them fun.
