In my story today about the Packers' playoff scenarios, I was incorrect when I said two losses by the Philadelphia Eagles would help the Packers.

I incorrectly applied the tiebreakers.

In actuality, it doesn't matter what the Eagles do. The worst the Eagles can finish in the NFC is 9-3. If the Packers finish 1-1, they will be 8-4. (That loss to Tampa Bay really hurts the Packers in this regard.)

So there only four possible ways for the Packers to make the playoffs:
[ul]1) Packers win their final two games;

OR

1) Packers go 1-1 and the Dallas Cowboys lose once;

OR

1) Packers go 1-1 and the New York Giants lose once.

OR

1) Packers go 0-2 and the Cowboys or Giants go 0-2.[/ul]

Here's why.

If the Eagles go 0-2, that will leave the Eagles, Packers and Giants tied at 10-6. In that scenario, the tiebreakers are applied like this (and this was confirmed with a league spokesman):

[ul]1) Eagles win division tiebreaker over the Giants since the Eagles swept the Giants;
2) Then you compare Eagles to the Packers. Eagles qualify for playoffs as fifth seed based on conference record (9-3 to 8-4);
3) That leaves the Packers and Giants. Giants qualify for playoffs as sixth seed based on record against common opponents (Green Bay has three losses; Giants one). Packers are eliminated.[/ul]

If the Eagles go 1-1 with a win on Sunday over the Denver Broncos and a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, the Eagles and Cowboys are 11-5, and Packers and Giants are 10-6. In that scenario:

1) Cowboys win NFC East because of sweep of Eagles;
2) Eagles qualify as the fifth seed at 11-5;
3) That leaves Packers and Giants tied at 10-6. Just like in the above scenario, Giants qualify for the playoffs as the sixth seed because of a better record against common opponents. Packers are eliminated.

I said last night on Twitter that Packers fans should root for Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings in both of their final two games.

I wasn't kidding.

If the Vikings beat the Chicago Bears on Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals have no chance at getting a first-round bye, meaning they would likely have nothing to play for against the Packers in the season finale. That would make getting the two wins required for the playoffs easier for the Packers.

And a win by the Vikings over the Giants in the final game of the season delivers a playoff berth to the Packers provided they beat the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

This talk of 'the Tamp game really hurts us' really annoys me. Didn't the TWO losses to the Vikings hurt us MORE? If we had split the contests we'd in a lot better shape even with losing the Tampa game.

It would give us another conference win as well as overall win while taking one of each away from the Vikings which without checking, puts us at the same 10 - 4 record and still in contention for the division and a home game, not to mention a possible one week bye.

yeah...but that loss to Tampa was incredibly ridiculous whereas the losses to the Vikqueens were not completely unprecedented.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

Cheer for the Eagles this week. Two great things happen if they win:

1.) The Vikings will have to play their starters against the Giants the final week of the season because if they lose the Eagles could possibly win the #2 seed.

2.) Arizona will have nothing to play for having been locked into the #4 seed before they host the Pack.

The Tampa game helped more than it hurt, in my opinion. The team right now is playing at a much higher level than they did prior to that loss.

I'm just hoping for another shot at the viQueens--I think the outcome would be different third time around.

All these possibilities makes my head hurt. I HOPE we win out, and don't have to worry about what other teams do.
That said, i'd LOVE a win tomorrow, and a loss by the Plowboys or Giants. Then we would be in, and not have to worry.

I disagree. Losing to Tampa was expected, even I predicted that we'd lose that one as we don't seem to win at that stadium, ever. Granted, once I seen how bad they were doing this year, I felt we had a chance to break the curse. However, it's not a surprise that a lesser team beats another team when they are (as I said repeatedly) over confident in their own abilities. So, no, the loss to Tampa was not unprecedented. People fail to look at the big picture after they see a team that is 0 and what not suddenly they are garbage.

The Vikings game, we should have won one of them.

Good point.

Losing to Tampa could of been a reason why we had a 5 game win streak.

Mucky Tundra (34m) : missed FG+XP looming large with the Texans down 8 atm
Mucky Tundra (59m) : Fairbairn with a missed FG and XP for Houston already
Mucky Tundra (1h) : NFL posted the Orens hit as a highlight on Twitter; deleted now. Really sums things up.
Martha Careful (1h) : watching both the Kansas City and Houston pass rush makes me glad we fired our defensive line coach
Martha Careful (1h) : this was not our year… especially from New York
Zero2Cool (1h) : It's not like there was a plethora of games distracting New York from calling in the penalty
TheKanataThrilla (1h) : A little salt in the wound to fine Burks now
Zero2Cool (2h) : Bears interview Adam Stenavich for HC
Zero2Cool (2h) : Oren Burks fined $8,333 for unnecessary roughness on Nixon hit that caused fumble
Mucky Tundra (2h) : if it's gonna happen here, it'll be the Texans pass rush making Mahomes miserable

Martha Careful (2h) : I don't see it happening but I would sure love to see Houston pull the upset here
Mucky Tundra (3h) : *rebuffed
Mucky Tundra (3h) : Bears coaching search in trouble? Bears reached out to the Steelers about trading for Mike Tomlin and rebuffes per Schefter

Martha Careful (4h) : Beast, your is a very strong point...for a change 😊😊😊
beast (4h) : More consistent with their time and rest between games.
beast (4h) : I think all the AFC games should be on Saturday and all the NFC should be on Sunday (maybe reverse the order every year), to more consistent
Martha Careful (5h) : Don't you think teams with the byes should play Sunday? It is fairer to opponents to give an additional day. instead of short week.
beast (17-Jan) : You have a point, it's a very wise move, therefore, that can't be what the Jets are doing.
Zero2Cool (17-Jan) : It'd be a wise move.
beast (17-Jan) : I think Jets are just killing time, and picking up information as they wait for their guy to get done with the playoffs.

beast (15-Jan) : Cover 2, keep a CB and Safety over top of both WRs... and Hurts (like Rodgers) is overly careful and doesn't like any risk in his throws.

beast (15-Jan) : Apparently because players aren't doing the small things when the coaches tell them, and LaFleur believes they're more likely
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : Jordan isn't a vocal guy. Why not let him lead his way?
Zero2Cool (15-Jan) : I'm not sure it ever bodes well when you have to tell your team leader to be more vocal.

civic (14-Jan) : Clements is taking a lot of experience and knowledge out the door with him
Zero2Cool (14-Jan) : Longtime Packers QB coach Tom Clements is retiring, Matt LaFleur says.
Zero2Cool (14-Jan) : Didn't watch the game so can't say
Mucky Tundra (14-Jan) : Anyone else abhor MNF wildcard games?
Martha Careful (14-Jan) : Why is it that the Rams rookies can contribute right away but our first and second year guys are too young to contribute in a meaningful way
Martha Careful (14-Jan) : Yes, Saquon Barkley had a very nice game. But he has a much better offensive line in front of him. I'll take Josh Jacob's. I love the guy
