Packers have only 4 starting jobs open

Pack93 will hate this post.

The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers are ready to defend their title.

Their roster is so deep, and their talent so plentiful, that only four of 22 starting jobs are up for grabs as they enter the second week of training camp.

Perhaps the most intriguing battle is taking place in the backfield, where halfback Ryan Grant missed almost the entire 2010 season with an ankle injury and rookie James Starks came on like gangbusters late in the season and the playoffs. The Packers also added competition with third-round draft choice Alex Green.

The other starting position up for grabs on offense is at left guard, where rookie first-round draft choice Derek Sherrod is squaring off against T.J. Lang after Daryn Colledge departed in free agency.

On defense, the outside linebacker post opposite Clay Matthews features a three-man tussle involving Frank Zombo, Erik Walden and Brad Jones. At safety, Charlie Peprah will attempt to hang on to the job he assumed after Morgan Burnett went down with a knee injury in the first month of last season.

Injuries always can change the landscape, and there’s no telling which players might emerge from the shadows, but the other starting positions are all but locked up.
Training camp and the preseason will help shape the bottom end of the roster. Otherwise, the Packers are gearing up for another championship run.

Here is a position-by-position breakdown of how the roster should take shape. (The number in parentheses denotes how many players likely will be retained at each position).

Quarterback (3)

Matt Flynn will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, so his preseason performances will serve as a dress rehearsal of sorts for other teams that will consider signing him in 2012. Graham Harrell must prove he can become a credible backup, and it’s expected the Packers will keep him on the active roster all season. Meanwhile, the sky is the limit for Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Halfback (3)

Grant has received the bulk of reps with the No. 1 unit early in camp, an indication his injury didn’t affect his job status. However, he must prove he hasn’t lost a step. It’s possible Grant and Starks will split carries and form a solid 1-2 combination, which will save on wear and tear. Starks also could become the primary third-down back. Or Green could find a change-of-pace role depending on how quickly he learns the offense and develops.

Fullback (2)

There’s no way the Packers will keep three fullbacks again. I said the same thing last year and was dead wrong. However, with the departure of Korey Hall in free agency, chances are starter John Kuhn and Quinn Johnson will be the only keepers, which will enable the Packers to hang on to an extra tight end.

Tight end (4)

There’s too much talent at this position to keep only three players. Jermichael Finley should become one of the best tight ends in the NFL, which leaves five players fighting for three jobs. The guess is Tom Crabtree, rookie D.J. Williams and second-year player Andrew Quarless stick, but don’t count rookie Ryan Taylor out of the equation. If Quarless can’t stay healthy, he might not have a job at the end of camp.

Receiver (5)

This is another loaded position led by Pro Bowler Greg Jennings. Veteran Donald Driver, 36, isn’t getting any younger but he is expected to hold off James Jones and Jordy Nelson for the starting job for at least one more year. The addition of second-round draft pick Randall Cobb could spell the end of the line for special teams ace Brett Swain.

Offensive line (9)

Defensive line (6)

Linebacker (8)

Cornerback (6)

Safety (4)

Special teams (3)

Is Pepreh running with the 1s or 2s? I thought he's been working with the 2s since Burnett came back.

And what of the DEs spots?

As for that roster positions guys I'd go with 2 QBs and keep another LB, DB, TE or RB

I think it foolish to pen such a article for any type of publication before you have anything to base it off of. Just don't understand it..

It does generate discussion points for a forum though.

dfosterf (20-Feb) : Hasn"t Bosa missed more games than he has played in the last 3 years?
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : He hasn't been too bad when healthy but I don't feel like I ever heard much about when he is
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Felt like he was more interested in his body, than football. He flashed more than I expected
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : When he was coming out, I thought he'd be flash in pan.
Mucky Tundra (19-Feb) : Joey seems so forgettable compared to his brother for some reason
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : NFL informed teams today that the 2025 salary cap will be roughly $277.5M-$281.5M
Zero2Cool (19-Feb) : Los Angeles Chargers are likely to release DE Joey Bosa this off-season as a cap casualty, per league source.
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : If the exploit is not fixed, we'll see tons of "50 top free agents, 50 perfect NFL team fits: We picked where each should sign in March" lo
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Issue should be solved, database cleaned and held strong working / meeting. Boom!
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : It should be halted now.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : usually spambots are trying to get traffic to shady websites filled with spyware; the two links being spammed were to the Packers website
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : you know when you put it that way combined with the links it was spamming (to the official Packers website)
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yep. You can do that with holding down ENTER on a command in Console of browser
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : even with the rapid fire posts?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : I'm not certain it's a bot.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I've got to go to work soon which is a pity because I'm enthralled by this battle between the bot and Zero
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, I see what that did. Kind of funny.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : now it's a link to Wes Hodkiezwicz mailbag
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Now they're back with another topic

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : They got 118 slapped in there.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : that's why it confused the hell out of me
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Yeah, but this is taking a headline and slapping it into the Packers Talk
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Wasnt there a time guests could post in the help forum?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : lol good question, kind of impressed!
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : So how is a guest posting?

Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Working. Meetings.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Lots of fun; the spam goes back 4 or 5 pages by this point
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought you'd look for yourself and put 2 and 2 together lol. I overestimated ya ;)
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : I thought Guests couldnt post?
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : And gosh that's gonna be fun to clean up! hahaa
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : Oh. Why not just say that then? Geez.
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : check the main forum, seems a spam bot is running amok
Zero2Cool (18-Feb) : What?
Mucky Tundra (18-Feb) : Is the Packers online game "Packers Predict" now available for 2024? I can't tell
Zero2Cool (17-Feb) : Bengals planning to Franchise Tag Tamaurice Higgins
Zero2Cool (14-Feb) : Packers are hiring Luke Getsy as senior offensive assistant.
Martha Careful (12-Feb) : I would love to have them both, esp. Crosby, but either might be too expensive.
Zero2Cool (12-Feb) : Keisean Nixon is trying to get Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams lol
Mucky Tundra (11-Feb) : Yeah where did it go?
