You can dismiss this if you'd like, seeing as I can't provide the source, but it's been said his agent has been in talks and they have been hung up on the years and guaranteed money for the contract. I don't know how true this is, or even how relevant it is, so take it with a grain of salt. I heard this before the Chillar deal was announced.

I would expect his deal to be done before the end of the year when the cap money needs to be used or lost. I can't recall that dead line.

Now, I don't believe that you should just throw around contract money. Problem here, though, like the article states, is that Ted Thompson likes to wait untill it's really necessary to resign a player.

There's something to be said about that, I'm sure, but you usually don't make friends to relatively underpaid players.

If Ted keeps playing him on a 2nd round contract and then goes out and resigns him short term on an RFA contract, I don't know if he'll even accept a 'big' contract from us. I can imagine that he's going out and testing the FA market. Who knows how much a team will pay for an elite safety. They don't come by that often.

Did anybody get a sniff of Chillar's extension before it happened. Did anybody predict Rodgers extension last year. Not hearing anything is not a surprise.

I agree you dont want to piss off players but if Collins doesnt sign a new deal in 2011 we can franchise him for $6m or so which is reasonable. We could then either franchise him again or tag and trade him if we had the depth in place by then to replace him.

As for Ted Thompson only signing players at the last second that wasn't the case with Rodgers. Many people were surprised that he was locked up so early.

There's certain players I'd wait with, then some I wouldn't.

As Ron Wolf's credo is/was ... if you like a player, go get that player. In this sense, if you like this player, retain this player, now. However I do have good reason to believe they are already talking about it, so I'm not too worried.

Collins is one of my favorite players on the team - although I didnt really like the hold-out preseason (or whatever it was) ... father/family/holdout ... noone really confirmed or denied etc ...

We better be keeping harris is all I know (hopefully he recovers well).

I just want him to get his ring this year šŸ˜‰

Also, If Nick makes the Probowl again this year, he would able to cash in a little more. If he signed now and then got that vote, it would be in his head that he signed for less because he rushed.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Nick Collins deserves a big pay raise, hell ya, they should pay him, let's use up our remaining cap room, we don't want to piss him off, he deserves it, yada yada yada. For me personally, and this is just one poster's opinion, it just seems like the more you look into the realities of the situation, the less likely you are to agree with those that are in the "sign him now" crowd.

How much? (a prediction, lol) Wade and I said jack the living shit (well, I said-he said 20%, lol) out of the ticket and concession prices. Oh, no, we were told. What about the 30% rule for next year? I don't know what it will mean, either. I don't give a shit, pay the man...Just don't wonder why someone else didn't get signed, or why the ticket and beer prices went through the roof, etc.

One thing to just throw out "top safety money" in an article, quite another to explore what that number is going to be and how it would impact the signing or nonsigning of other players.

crickets.

Here is Profootballfocus rankings of safeties for 2009.

Cumulative Safety rankings 2009

One safety is rated above him. Ed Reed of the Baltimore Ravens.

Ed Reed got a 6 year, 40 million dollar contract extension with 15 million dollar signing bonus.

In 2006.

Anybody noticed what player's salaries have been doing since that contract was signed? I think they have gone up.

You sure you want to forego the RFA tag?

That gets you another year at a non-insane figure...

Maybe he doesn't want top safety money. Ya, that's probably it.

Nevermind.

As long as Ted Thompson has taken Nick aside and said "don't worry Nick, you're going to get paid."

We don't know what goes behind the scenes. I'm pretty confident though that management has been communicating with Collins.

Collins is an elite player. Pro Bowl last year and 2nd in the NFL in INTs for the past 2 years. That means he's ahead of Sharper? Yes it does. And we all know the truth about Sharper - will give up the big play for a chance at an INT. Nick is best of both worlds - he gets INTs but doesn't really give up the big play.

I want to see him in green and gold for at least the next five years.
