Cheer for Giants to beat the Cowboys and Eagles to beat the Falcons this week.

The Packers want the Cowboys to be a wild card since the Packers have the head to head tiebreaker.

Assuming a Packer win of course:

1) If the Giants beat the Cowboys and Eagles beat the Falcons, the Eagles then lead the East. The Packers move ahead of the Cowboys for #1 wild card and the Cowboys are #2 wild card behind the Packers. It is also a kiss of death for Atlanta's playoff chances. The Packers and Cowboys are a game ahead of the Giants but the Giants have a sweep of the Cowboys. This may be the best scenario long term.

2) If the Cowboys win and the Eagles win the Packers are more firmly entrenched at #2 Wild Card because the Giants and Falcons behind them are further behind. This is the safest scenario but the Packers are only destined for #2 wild card. It gives them more room to lose.

3) If the Cowboys win and the Falcons win, the Packers become the #1 seed but they are still in a tight battle with the Eagles and Falcons.

4) A Giants win against the Cowboys and a Falcons win over the Eagles puts the Packers in the #1 Wild Card but the teams behind are much closer to them. This is almost the worst case scenario.

The worst thing is a Packer loss.

The Giants and Eagles will have a show down next week.

So cheer for the Cardinals to beat the vikings, Giants to beat the Cowboys and Eagles to beat the Falcons.

These are debatable. I'll be cheering for the Cowboys against the Giants. Head-to-head only comes into play if two teams, and only two teams, have the same record. If there is a three-way tie, head-to-head is irrelevant and conference record is the tiebreaker. I think that if the Packers end up on the playoff bubble, they will be more likely to be in a three-way tie than a two-way tie.

If the Giants lose, they are 6-6 and in a big hole because they will have to win out to reach the 10-6 mark. I am with you in cheering for the Eagles over the Falcons, though. Just as I would like to see the Giants lose and fall to 6-6, I'd like to see the same thing happen to the Falcons.

I'm more worried about the records of these marginal teams than I am about the Cowboys. In fact, if the Giants and Falcons both lose, the Packers could lose on Monday and still be in position for that last wild card spot, a full game ahead of the competition.

I don't see much difference between being the #1 wild card vs. the #2 wild card. The wild card teams will either play at Arizona or at the winner of the East. Either way, they'll be playing a team that is good but flawed. After that, the road to the Super Bowl probably leads through both Minnesota and New Orleans.

I'm rooting for Dallas and Philly today.

A win for Dallas and Philly could almost knock the Giants and Falcons out of the race, leaving us, the Cowboys and Eagles fighting for 3 places.

Dallas also have the toughest schedule and could easily lose all their remaining games, so I'd be content for them to get a W today.

The Falcons are dangerous due to their soft schedule. Also, if the race comes down to just us against NFC East teams they are going to beat each other up which helps us. After today the Falcons wont be part of that civil war.

And if I know you, you probably want us to not get anywhere near that NFCC game, and want the Vikings to go on and win the Super Bowl.

I think this weekend is one of those where one probably roots for a lot of ties.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
