Head Coach Mike McCarthy has preached that the Green Bay Packers' identity needs to start with defense for the team to be successful.

So it's no surprise then that during the team's current three-game winning streak the defense has continued to climb in the league rankings, all the way to No. 1 as of Monday.

That's right, No. 1. The Packers rank first in the league in yards allowed per contest, surrendering just 281.5 on average. The last time the Packers ranked No. 1 in the league in total defense was following Week 3 of the 2001 season. The last time the team held the top spot this late in the season was at the end of 1996, a Super Bowl championship year.

No one is making any such bold predictions with five games remaining in 2009 and a wild-card playoff fight on Green Bay's hands the rest of the way. But if the defense continues to play at this level through December, the Packers like their chances of possibly making some noise.

"Being No. 1 in Week 12, 13, 14, really doesn't give you any merit," McCarthy said. "You want to be No. 1 at the end of the season. But I think our defense definitely is on the right pace to be the championship defense that we anticipate we'd have here."

It's been a gradual climb, beginning with the transition to the 3-4 scheme under defensive coordinator Dom Capers.

Damn, thank you Dom for bringing this defense a hell of a long way.

Honestly I hate how the NFL does somethings... this is one of them... why do we rate teams by yards? Points are what matter...

The Packers are #1 in yards but #12 in points... which would you rather be #1 in? ... I'd rather be #1 in stopping the other team from scoring...

I agree...

Here is one way to become # 1 in yards allowed. Have shitty special team kick coverage, and give the opposition short fields all year long.

I agree more than one aspect should be but they're over simplifying like they usually do... if their gonna do that I think the points should be the leading one if your only gonna do one....

Did Aikman say which which aspect he thought should be considered? Ether way I think points should be the leading or tied as the leading state when considering them...

Also for the record I think Dom has done a very good job (for the most part) I'm not saying anything bad about him... just the way the NFL over simplify things and which stats they pick to judge who's the best stat wise...

i like this i think our defense is almost this good or around here. the points thing can be put on about how terrible our kick coverages are and special teams deficiencies.

Yup, the STs aspect was discussed in the "A Little Perspective on Defense" thread.

Can we merge those 2 threads? I think we're going to have a lot of redundant discussions if we don't.

The ranking should be based on both. I think we have a top 10 defense.

When we get into the top 10 teams in sacks, this is going to be a special defense. The key to keeping it moving in forward is replacing aging players at the right time. I would try and get Jolly and Pickett locked up right now with the extra cap money. Collins' contract is going to be the difficult one. Harris can come back and play out his contract, but Kampmann might have played his last game as a Packer. I'd still like to find another safety because we have all seen what hapens when one of our starters goes down.

Player reaction was mixed to #Packers' No. 1 defensive ranking. Ryan Pickett, among others, downplayed it, said there's a lot to improve on.

Pickett: "Were not finishing. We have teams with basically no yards the whole game, in the fourth quarter, we give up too many yards."

And Ryan Pickett is exactly right. It's like they think they have the game wrapped up and they just roll over. He needs to rally the defense. I like how he thinks.

And Gravedigga, I can't believe that you would have even thought about firing Dom Capers. I do respect you though for standing up and admitting it.

Click HERE  to see that we ARE the number one ranked defense. Unless, you don't think the NFL.com website speaks the truth.

Granted, its by yards, not the greatest measurement of how a overall defense performs.

Everyone knows that the Vikings are one of the best 3 defenses in the league... even though they are 8th in scoring D, 8th in yardage D, and 20th in INTs. But come on! They have Jared Redneck Allen and the my-state-protects-me-from-all-drug-violations Williams brothers!

I think our D would be higher ranked in scoring D if it weren't for special teams and the team relaxing late in a couple of blowout games.

More than half of Jared Allen's sacks game against the Packers in two games. They still count, but I'm starting to question the horny approach some have towards anointing him as the best. I'm not saying he's a slouch, just saying I think when looking at his numbers, how they were compiled, he has the Packers to thank.

I wonder what ours and Minnesotas defenses would be ranked if we had to play teams of the offensive caliber of NO and Arizona regularly.

I mean come on, we each get to play Chicago and Detroit twice a year. This year we got the AFC central which don't exactly light it up.

My point is I don't think we have the number 1 defense because I don't believe we could shut down NO, Arizona, Minnesota, New England, or the Colts.

I do however think that we have made tremendous strides this season and I anticipate with great enthusiasm continued improvement.

Just like KGB - 12-15 sacks, but who were they against - Chicagos dog shit line at the time.

Allen is awesome because protection is rolled to him but he still applies pressure. Just taking sack totals doesn't complete the picture. It's a half-ass assessment.
