When Fox game analyst Daryl Johnston looks at Aaron Rodgers, he thinks of Alex Smith.

He also thinks how two organizations, the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers, were able to approach the development of a young quarterback.

Johnston, along with Kenny Albert and Tony Siragusa, will call the Packers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers telecast at noon Sunday on Fox.

Johnston said the Packers were able to let Rodgers, the 24th pick in the 2005 draft, develop his skills for three seasons and watch how a Hall of Fame quarterback handled being a starter in the National Football League.

Smith, the No. 1 pick in the 2005 draft, started seven games his rookie season, 16 in 2006, seven in 2007, and none this season.

Smith never delivered on the promise he showed.

Johnston does not argue that Smith would have turned into a top quarterback if he was able to do what Rodgers was allowed to do in Green Bay.

But he does wonder.

He wonders if Smith had been able to learn the position for a few years as a reserve what effect it would have had on his career, a career that might be over.

What a difference in the approach these two teams were able to take, Johnston said, referring to the development of those two quarterbacks. Aaron was able to grow up and mature and understand and learn from somebody, watch somebody who knows how to do it. Then when his opportunity came, he was so much more mature than he was coming out of college.

Alex Smith happened to be thrown right into the fire and is struggling, Johnston said. Who knows, he could be out of the league next year. We dont even know. Its just a complete difference on how those two guys careers have panned out.

Johnston thinks too many quarterbacks are compared to the very greatest who have been forced to start early in their careers.

I think sometimes its unfair when we go to a Troy Aikman or Peyton Manning and say, look, these guys were thrown right into it. Right out of the gate they took their lumps. They all say there is no substitute for getting on the field and seeing things at game speed as opposed to being on the sidelines and watching it and seeing it on film. I agree with that. But I also take that with a grain of salt because Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning were going to be fantastic quarterbacks whether they started Day 1 or Year 4. Those guys were just very, very unique.

Unfortunately sometimes, when we throw some of these other guys into it, whether its an Alex Smith, Akili Smith, Tim Couch, Ryan Leaf, the guys who havent made it, maybe they werent ever going to make it, Johnston said. But what if they would have had the opportunity that Aaron Rodgers had? Would they be at the stage Aaron is in his career right now? Well never know that.

I didn't care for this article much. It almost comes off like he is discrediting Aaron Rodgers because he's been brought up the 'old school' way.

Johnston got hit in the head too many times. I take the comments from actual QBs about how important actual playing time was in their development much more seriously over his opinion.

Here I though this thread was going to be about his stache..

To be honest.. I wish more QB's were brought along the "old school" way.. I think you would see more consistent play from the QB's in this league.

3 years on the bench gives you time to learn the dark and mysterious arts of magic as well. Defying gravity on a sideline dash, throwing a no look behind the back pass to a fullback, escaping a sack and throwing a jump pass for a 1st down, all of these things can be credited solely to his time as an understudy. πŸ˜‰

There's a lot of nuts and bolts tidbits we've been able to extract about the progression of Aaron Rodgers since his arrival here. Remember Mike McCarthy forcing him to cut his baby fat in year one? Remember how crappy he looked then? Remember how Mike McCarthy got him to get rid of that (Telford sp?) ball position? Remember how everyone bragged about how good he looked both in pre-season and as the scout QB (Tony Romo) for last year's 'boys match-up? Remember how there was a legitimate argument about who had the stronger arm last year? Remember how it was always brought up that he has zero history of throwing interceptions? I think the numero uno thing riding the pine got him was truly learning defenses, check-downs, and "target-fixation avoidance"... and frankly, I'm still not 100% convinced he learned much of that from Brett. I know I like what I see, even in the loss to those criminals from Texas. We gotta winner IMO.

Personally, I think if Alex Smith was tutored by SF's head coach for three years, he'd still be the same QB. True, three different offenses, but didn't Rodgers have that too?

2005 - Tom Rossley
2006 - Jeff Jagzadrinkski
2007 - Joe Philibin

i feel bad for smith but a-rod has it he dont he will sit with the rest talent is given coaches enhance what you already have i think the 3 years helped him alot dont get me wrong some guys just dont have it and smith is one of them look at others who are out of jobs because they are not good and a coach cant give you talent when you dont have it a-rod has it and took what the coaches taught him too the field

I still give a lot of weight to what guys like Manning and Aikman say when they say they learned by playing. It didn't hurt both of those guys had good running backs and a star receiver early on. SF really never had that for Smith to develop with. I agree with Zero, though, I think he's still the same QB even if he sits three years.

I don't think there's a right way or a wrong way to do it as each situation can be different. First I think a QB has to real real mentally srong to strt as a rookie like Manning and unlike Ryan Leaf. That part I think Rodgers would of been fine. The other factor I think is what kind of team is around him. Rookie QB plus young team = trouble. There I think Aaron was lucky not to start his rookie year with that team. A lot different then the team Big Ben got to start as a rookie with

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me the lottery numbers, after all most of you supposedly know the future and how Rodgers is a great QB after 3 games (2 against the worst pass defenses in the NFL and 1 where he looked like a deer in headlights) So please guys seeing you know the future and claim he is going to be a great GIMMIE the lottery numbers i need the money lol. As far as A-Rod hes only got 2 games left before hes on a long vacation πŸ™‚ the Yankees Suck
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be πŸ™‚ (PS, Zero should charge for this)

dont you understand Zero?

Anytime someone praises AR, they are saying he is going to be a HOF..

Even if they compare him to Smith who threw for about 350 yards for his 1st 3 starts, and say Aaron Rodgers is better after 3 games then Smith was after 3 games, the hidden message is Aaron Rodgers is HOF

Where Rodgers lacks in his jock-strap carrying ability, he makes up for in his on field maturity, calmness, mental acuity and physical talent. And I think that's a tad more important than whether you hold it by the cup or by the strap.
