Put yourself in Thompson's position, folks. If he makes a head coaching change he's effectively saying it'll be 3 years before the Packers will be ready for a deep run into the playoffs.

If he hires a new head coach, that head coach is going to need to put his stamp on things in a big way. They're going to be system changes, personnel changes, philosophy changes, what have you.

How many coaches do you see taking the team, however good it might appear to be on paper, deep into the playoffs before the third year? I can remember two: Seifert and (choke) Switzer). And both those had teams without the kind of personnel weaknesses the packers have.

So, suppose Thompson is concerned about McCarthy having what it takes. If so, and if he's honest with himself, he knows it's likely that the new coach, whoever he is, is going to take more than a year to bring the team where it needs to be. So there's no gain to be had with letting McCarthy go now.

It just isn't going to happen now. It might happen at the end of the season. But it won't happen before then.

I have no doubt that this is a ridiculous thought, but I'm drowning my sorrows.
Perhaps the players are sick of McCarthy's incompetence and are throwing him under the bus to hasten his exit.
These players can't possibly be as bad as they looked today.

Ted needs to step up to a Microphone and say.

"We have fixed it, Mike McCarthy is no longer the coach of the Green Bay Packers. Dom Capers is the interim head coach with Joe Philbin remaining as offensive coordinator."

The worst part of watching this game was by the end of the third quarter you knew where it was headed, same football team different week. I wasn't even upset afterwards because it wasn't a shock I'm sad to say

I'm really at the verge of saying fire McCarthy as well. Today was just fucking hard to take, I don't even know what else to say.

I hate to admit it as I ALWAYS am willing to give the team the absolute benefit of the doubt, but now its just stupid..

We are starting to become the laughing stock...And as a Packer fan I wont stand for that

Good point, buck.

I think you touch on something important here. It's part of the reason I harp on attitude so much. I want a team where I can expect them to take games over. Especially on teams that, on paper, they should be totally outclassing.

Not a team that is playing a finesse "beat them by trying to be unpredictable since we're so bloody smart and good" game.

Which seasoned coach would come without wanting to be God? I don't ever want to see a combined GM/HC in Green Bay.

Assuming Thompson does something about the OL personnel (just bear with me - I'm not saying he will), as long as they brought in the right HC the team could easily turn around quickly next season. As for the rest of this season, realistically it's almost done - I'd love to see them beat Dallas, Pitt & the Ravens, and I'll be rooting them on the whole way, but at the moment that's severely unrealistic. Tampa's tougher than teams like the Browns, Lions and Rams, but they aren't a good team.

The reason to fire MmC before the season's out is to send a message that under achieving is unacceptable. Let Philbin run the offense the balance of the year, as far as I'm concerned - run the crap out of the ball and see if Grant can be the guy or not. You don't want to lose guys like Woodson, but being cool with mediocrity could do that.

They can improve on last season's record, and they can make valuable strides on defense, but I have a hard time believing they can make the playoffs after this game - playoff-caliber teams don't lose games like that.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
