Man, knowing what I know now, if I lived on the East Coast for a few years, I'd never move back to Wisconsin. This state is a great place to visit, but a lousy place to live. At least the smaller towns are. I don't have as much experience with Madison as I'd like.

Midwesterners are just too nice. All the time. To everyone. And for that reason, I've come to the conclusion that it's mostly fake. I'd rather be friends with a sincere asshole than a fake sweetheart. I'm too selfish to want to be treated like everyone else.

I don't agree with that assessment Non. People here are nice because they were taught to treat others with respect. That isn't "fake" nice. It's respect. The East coast (what i have seen of it) people are self centered. I know thats a generalization, but it's only based on what i saw.
I hold doors open for people when i'm at the store. Is that "fake" niceness? I don't think so.

I wrote that post partly tongue in cheek, but there is some truth to what I said too. You say that Midwesterners are respectful, but East Coasters are self-centered. As I see it, that's just the problem with so many Midwesterners -- they're blind to their own self-centeredness because they're so nice. Don't get me wrong: I have nothing against niceness. But so many people around here are so focused on being nice that they're afraid of confrontation. They're so intent on not hurting someone's feelings that they won't just come out and say what they think. So their niceness degenerates into flakiness, and it drives me nuts. I'd far rather have someone say, "You know, I'm just not interested, but thanks anyway," or even, "I think that's a fucking dumb idea -- go away," than "Oh, wow, that sounds great!" -- but the person never shows up. And that's the experience I get time after time around here. People won't commit to ANYTHING, but neither will they give a firm refusal. They don't see how incredibly self-centered their outward niceness is.

It's a personal preference, obviously. I'd far rather find out in 10 seconds that you don't like me than find out weeks or months later that you were just too nice to turn me down openly. I don't like wasting time, and the less time I invest, the less it hurts when the inevitable happens. I'd prefer spending my time with people who truly want to be with me, even if that's only a few.

In other words, I'd rather have two sincere admirers than dozens of very nice flakes.

By the way, I love Wisconsin and I'm very glad to go to school here. I'm glad I grew up here. I just wish there was a little more honesty and a little less niceness. You can tell someone to "fuck off" very respectfully -- or at least, I think it's more respectful to be blunt and honest than to be sweetly dishonest.

Oh, and congratulations on the graduation and impending nuptials. I'm happy for you. šŸ™‚

Get a job with the city or county. Then you can join the union and bellyache that Walker and Barrett are cutting everything back to where you can no longer retire at age 52.

30% of the entire city budget goes toward pensions. What a racket.
