I don't think the Packers brought Ahman back for the running game but for his blocking abilities. He was a good blocker in the good days when he was with the packers. But, I don't like this move at all, I'd rather have Dominic Rhodes on our team than Green. Let's see if he can teach Ryan Grant how to run the football and not just fall down when some lays a pinkie on him.

This was clearly a move based on blocking and receiving skills. If the Packers were looking for a player to run in between the tackles, Kregg Lumpkin would've been promoted from the practice squad.

Grant isn't much of a third down back nor much of a receiver and Jackson has always been a work in progress with his blocking. Like it or not, that was a weakness. I personally like the move. Nobody out there is going to solve the Packers' running game problems, but blocking is a whole different story. The Packers looked at a key area which is 3rd down, receiving, and blocking and they upgraded. Nothing wrong with that.

Yep. Put this in context - McCarthy's been revisiting early '07 lately with more short, quick passes - Green is a great screen guy - Green's also good pass blocker. It makes sense. no, it isn't a tackle or some big name like Jackson, but I think we as fans are going to have to accept that Thompson just doesn't do that much.

I'd rank this with the Chillar pickup - he's got skills they can use, and unlike with Chillar the unit as a whole isn't that far off course.

We'll see how much of a screen guy he still is.

Grant can't catch a ball to save his life. Neither could Wynn. Jackson isn't much of a blocker, but a good screen guy and good in space. Problem is, how good is Green still at screens? When our O-line can't even get in front of our RB, I'd rather have Grant out there than Green at this point in his career.

And he always was a decent blocker with the Packers. Not so much with the Texans.

Chris Perry is still out there. So is JJ Arington. Maybe they're a little less in the blocking department, but not by much. And they haven't hit that 30s wall that hit Green so horribly hard.

I don't think that this is a horrible signing at all. He's an ok player. I just think that we could've gotten more out of guys like the two that I mentioned earlier, because Green has declined horribly in the last two years.

i think rockmolder spoke for the 'critics' very well. If Ted is going to make a move, though I'm glad that he did, it seems that there were other options that could have been better.

Of course we're not going to find our ticket to the superbowl lying on the couch in October, but Ahman has been borderline awful since hitting about 29 Y.O. where guys such as Arrington or Rhodes showed some glimmer of life recently.

Well, clearly it's neither a big signing or a big deal. Frankly, neither would Perry or Arrington - at least Green did produce at a high level at some point in his career, which is hard to say about either of those two backs.

The way I see it, at worst Green retires in GB, where he belongs - and maybe they get something out of him. Bonus, if that's the case.

Bottom line is that Thompson isn't going to get us anything substantial via trade or FA, and certainly will never make the kinds of moves that get bandied about this board. It is what it is.

I hope Green's got more in the tank than we suspect - if so, he could do a lot to open up those underneath routes and provide a good safety net for Rodgers. Like you said, we'll see.

I suppose. I guess I just don't think of Ahman Green as a legend. My main memories of him are of wondering when he was going to fumble the ball. Then again, this was during the period when I was limited to listening to the games on the radio, so I didn't get to see much of him on the field. I have far more memories of Dorsey Levins than I do of Ahman Gren.

I still don't think I'd give him the number. He chose to leave the Packers for greener pastures and has done essentially nothing since. And like I said, he's coming in as the #3 halfback, not the featured horse.

But I'm an iconoclast, so I'm sure that colors things too.

I love the signing. I wouldn't mind seeing a two back system between Green and Grant. That would be pretty good, IMO.

Although, I did hear in a previous post that JJ Arrington was still available. That would be a good change of pace back.....good speed out of the backfield. Also would help our return game....

I'm very thankful to see Green back in the Green and Gold, and I'm glad that he will retire a Packer.

I don't see how anybody can feel anything but maybe nostalgic about this signing. There's nothing but upside to bringing Green in at a #3. I mean, with Grant struggling to reach 20 carries in a game so far, how much impact has our #3 RB had up to this point? If Green can come in and contribute, that's fantastic. If he can't, we aren't any worse off.

Personally, I'd like to see our coaching staff really dig in and work with what we have rather than have Thompson out there trying to bring in new pieces. I feel like we have the talent to be a serious contender, even with our OL issues. I haven't been impressed with the play calling on both offense and defense so far the past couple weeks. I think we need to be out there utilizing our players the best way we can before we go out and try to make blockbuster trades like some people were hoping for.
