Much of the pressure was different this week. More from the LBers this week. Two minimum were ridiculous. There should never, ever be pressure from inside that quick. My god.

Looking forward to see Lang play and Tauscher back STARTING. Having those players on the edge that can be depended on makes the middle work much easier.

I agree. I am anxious to see what Tauscher has left. However, I think as a whole our Oline is inept to say the least.

Our blocking scheme sucks. We have a 5 WR package... Can we come up with 8 Offensive linemen package?... Half kidding!

Well we can have lineman report eligible and play TE. lOl

IMO, and I believe it is what Rodgers meant. Spread the field. Gets more players away from the LOS making blocking assignments easier to identify. I would go 4 wide (TE/WR) with 1 RB

This applies to the entire team, but I'd like to focus on the O line, since that is the subject of this topic.

Mike McCarthy needs to take penalties seriously. Enough pussyfooting around the issue. If you get a flag thrown on you, you get fined 100 dollars for each yard it cost the team (I would put a cap on that, no reason for someone to pay 6000 dollars for a Pass interference). In a game like today where the Packers were completely in control, he should have benched Clifton for three reasons.

1. Give him some rest so he doesn't kill himself
2. Penalties
3. Giving TJ Lang some experience

The same goes for anybody who makes a boneheaded penalty. If you lack discipline and are going to make dumb mistakes, sit your ass on the bench for at least a couple quarters and think about it. The downside is that we're running out of bodies to replace people with, especially at O line.

I'm also sick of Nick Barnett's swagger after plays in which he actually makes a tackle or doesn't commit a personal foul. You're mediocre at best this year and cost the team a LOT in penalties. Calm the heck down and save your energy for doing your job, rather than making an ass out of yourself.

I think that even if Clifton is ok to play the game next week, Lang should be in. At the very least, Lang could hold his own, and I saw some impressive push on some run plays, and pretty good blocking on passing downs. I think he's earned a start over an oft-flagged, injured Clifton. That ankle needs to get better more than we need him in the game.

+1 good post. I completely agree. In a bigger game Clifton's four penalties would have killed us. Plus, we were pretty much going to win this game so why play the shit out of a such a hurt player when have guys like Lang that really need the experience?

I wanted Clifton gone this offseason and was disappointed that he made the final roster. I didn't think he had a prayer of being reliable, and thus far he hasn't been able to stay on his feet for more than a couple of consecutive weeks. Then after he went down with injury, I was pretty sure he'd be rushed back too fast and would promptly reaggravate the injury, because that's what almost always seems to happen with ankles, especially with linemen. People on this board scoff at ankle injuries, but the fact is they can render a man for all practical purposes lame.

So he goes down again. When are we going to reconcile ourselves to the obvious fact that Clifton is no longer the answer -- short term or long term -- to our offensive line woes? And now we want to put our faith in Tauscher, because he's been reliable in the past. I don't get it.

If Rodgers goes down with a season-ending -- or heaven forbid, a career-threatening -- injury, by God, I hope a mob storms the next stockholders meeting. I don't care what philosophy Mike McCarthy may have about showing confidence in his guys and forcing them to get the job done, the fact is they're failing miserably. He needs to find another solution.

25 sacks in 5 games. Pathetic.

I agree. They have given up a LOT of sacks. I tend to think though that it should begin to reduce.

Of course, having a rookie take over for an oft injured old man is NOT a good situation to be in... Solutions are hard to come by though.

Last season I was expecting Clifton to be gone this year. That sort of died when Tauscher went down. No team ever want to go into and off season having to replace both bookends. I believe in Tauscher, because he is an extremely smart man and player, and plays with fundamentals, not with athleticism. I also want him healthy and reliable, so this next off season we are no longer in the position of need trying to find two starting tackles.

You can only do so much about personell now. There is very little chance that we'll find a team willing to give up a starting lineman, for anything but the steepest of prices. If there's an option for getting someone that's a big upgrade, cool. Go for it.

But in the meantime, I've come to the realization that we're pretty much stuck with what we have. The penalties need to go. We need to run more screens and slants (good job doing this today) to take pressure off of Rodgers. We absolutely need a short, safe option for Rodgers to go to on just about every play. In other words, we need to put as much of the protection game on anybody but the O line as possible.

I don't agree that our problems are worse...

The Clifton injury could turn out to be a blessing in disguise because Lang looks like he could be a player there. He looked very good run blocking today and his pass protection didn't seem too shabby either. Cliffy just cannot be counted on on a weekly basis anymore, if he's not banged up, he's not playing well. He had an awful game prior to the injury, something to the tune of 4 penalties and a sack or 2 given up. Same goes for Wells, he just can't hold up in the middle, he gets pushed back with ease and he's a liability out there. He got dominated by the Lions interior pass rush today, namely Grady Jackson, and Spitz is much better there. The right side of our Offensive Line didn't play too bad today, unless i'm mistaken. It seemed like most of the pressure was coming up the middle and from the left side, until Lang went out there. I say let Lang stay at LT, even if Clifton is ready to come back in a couple of weeks. He hasn't looked bad at all out there, he even held his own when he was thrown into the fire a couple weeks ago on National Television, in a hostile environment, with no reps at LT prior to that point and against the best DE in the NFL(Jared Allen). Will we have to give Lang some help from time to time? Sure, but I think he can hold his own out there and how great would that be if he played sound ball over the next 11 games and holds down that LT spot for the next 8-10 years? There's only one way to find out, by letting the kid play! This Offensive Line is going to get better, i'm sure of it, we just need to get some continuity out there, so hopefully Spitz is ready to go next week and we can get the same 5 games playing together for the next 11 games. In which case they could be gelling as we head into the playoffs, optimism, it's a beautiful thing.

Na, our defensive line was bad last year. There was absolutely no way of knowing that Jolly, Pickett, and Jenkins would ALL do as well as they have been so far this year. Raji hasn't made a huge impact because he hasn't seen that many snaps.

I agree to leave Lang in there, and see how he handles himself. I liked what I saw today, and hell, he is definitely a better option than Clifton. Don't even get me started on the alignment and false start penalties!

Keep in mind that the Lions are decimated on the defensive line, and were getting pressure with only 4 rushers most times...and those 4 weren't even their best 4!

SO tired of hearing "we'll get it looked at"! Look at it already, and FIX IT!
