Fix the bad line and this is a deep Playoff team. I'm serious. This isn't my green and gold lenses talking.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

That is the absolute bottom line that is handcuffing this team right now, Rodgers is getting hammered and bounced around on almost every deep drop..

The defense played to stop Peterson, which they did a pretty decent job, and take their chances with Favre beating them. He did enough to stay ahead of us.

I thought we did better than I thought we would against their offense, but there is no masking it, without Clifton on the left we are in deep caca.. and Barbre might not be a turnstile like he was in the opener, but he isn't much more than a overgrown speed bump in pass protection.

I thought Lang came in an did a fair job considering the opponent, but damn we need to shore up this offensive line during the bye week.

We have enough pieces elsewhere.. get er done.

BTW.. I gotta feeling that Nov 1st will be payback time. 😉

What a disappointing loss first of all. It hurt because its a divisional game and its against the douche Vikings. God I cannot stand Childress but at the same time I'm glad he's there because if they had a good coach, they would be unstoppable.

The Ugly

-Favre talking about praying after the game and god answering his prayers or something. I am not religious so I cannot be 100% sure but I'm pretty pretty sure that GOD DOES NOT CARE ABOUT FOOTBALL. Shutup.

-O-line - 8 sacks - enough said.

-Capers - How do you allow a 18 year vetern to have that much time. I see the strategy in that you wanted to stop Peterson. And you did but dude, thats not Tarvaris Jackson. Favre played one heck of a game. That 2nd touchdown with pump fake to the left, moving to the right and slinging off back foot and leading the receiver to the left, that was vintage Favre. He still has 'something', (though he could be injured and done at any point)so we need a new plan come November 1.

The Bad

-Rodgers holding on the ball too long. I get it, the O-line sucks. But Rodgers should still be progressing as a QB. But in terms of holding on to the ball too long, its the same as it was game #1 and game #20 of his career. The safety, come on dude. Its the endzone, your screwing your O-line, as useless as they are. You have a couple seconds max and your not Michael Vick, so your not going to outrun a bunch of DEs in the endzone. Get rid of it, or TAKE THE FREAKIN RISK. Your down 14! Big deal, you might get picked off and it will hurt your statistics. That play, I feel the O-line did its job, now its either the receivers arn't getting open, the coach is calling predictable plays, the QB isn't reading the field right or the QB isn't reacting and becoming creative but I don't think it was the O-line on the safety.

Rodgers is who he is. A very good QB in terms of talent and he is a statisical giant (though a lot of thats stats come when down by 2 touchdowns +). I don't care if we lose all the time but I want to see improvement. And he's holding the ball, not taking the risky throws when he has to just like he was in game #1 of his career.

-The use of Ryan Grant. If you have no confidence in your RB, why even keep him? Cut him. You can't throw every down and expect to keep the other team honest. I know we got him involved in some screens but still. Whats the ponit of him on the team if you don't trust him.

-Greg Jennings - whats going on, was it coverage, was it him, was it the play calling?

-Al Harris - He's done IMO. Yes he still decent. But in a big game, I don't want him there, please don't have him there. I love the guy for his play and guts but you can tell he's losing it.

-Coaching - penalties. I get it, the world is against the Packers but its not a concidence that we always get penalties against us. It can't just be the refs, at some point we have to acknowledge, we're not discplined.

-Donald Lee's drop in the end zone - WTF

The Good!

-That fumble recovery and touchdown. That was awesome! Take that AP. AP will be thinking about it next time too, we're in his head!

-Rodgers class - one of the best character guys I've seen. He waited around to talk to Favre at the end instead of running away. After the game, someone asked him if Jarden Allen took a cheap shot at him at the end of the 1st half. He said "no, the referee didn't think so and thats who makes the call". He didn't stir anything up, he's a classy guy. Great character, especially when he must have been annoyed at losing to Favre and the Vikings. Plus he didn't throw the O-line under the bus as a lot of people would have by this point. Plus he's obviously a good leader in that the players around him like him and want to win for him.

-As much as I crapped on him about, he handled the pressure well and played a solid game but I feel statistics don't tell the whole story. He made some great throws and some great decisions. I want to see him improve in all aspects of the game, not just from the box score prespective. He's got all the talent in the world but I really wish he'd show some kind of improvement on the holding the ball part and the taking risks part. I only criticize him because I want him to become better, maybe its the coaching staff not getting on him enough or him not listening but please put a ticking clock in his helmet.

-Jermichael Finley - awesome that we are getting him involved, you can see he has some talent.

-We stopped their Wildcat?
-We kept Harvin out the endzone for the first time this year?
-I don't know, the beer was good that I was drinking during the game?

Overall, at least we have another game against them at home. So this was a touch loss on the road, it still stings but its only the 4th game and we can still put everything together? Right? Right?

+1 to RedSoxExcel. I agree with most of what you said. There are a million things that went wrong that need to go right. I just have a few points to add, or at least to emphasize. Keep in mind that this, despite the 8 sacks, the failed 4th and goal, the fumble(s) and the pick, the Pack lost by 7 points. Seven. If you are looking for positives look at that. The Packers also finally had sustained drives, converting third downs. I am considering shutting AP down a minor victory.

If you are looking for the negatives, in a nutshell:
The sacks are not just a shitty O-line (although they bear the majority of the blame). This was a known problem coming into the game, so as much as I like him, A. Rodgers has to shoulder some of this blame too. He definately held the ball too long - on at least two of the sacks you could clearly see him go to the open RB checkdown and move on. Immediately after he was sacked. Damn man, throw the ball, +3 yards is always better than -2, -5, whatever.

How in the world are the Packers so bad at rushing the QB? If I recall, the last DC was fired for a vanilla defense that didn't pressure the QB. I was excited to see what Dom could do, but last night was pathetic. If Favre got touched more than 5 times I would be surprised.

I like McCarthy too, but sometimes his decisions surprise me. The 4th and goal that we went for it was one of them. On the road, against a good team with plenty of time left, please just take the points. If you can't get the ball in with the first three plays, what makes you think the 4th is the charm? Take a hint and live to play another day.

Penalties. I think the Pack got the raw end of the deal as far as good/bad/missed calls go, but if you take those out of the equation the team still hurt itself with stupid penalties and has nobody to blame but themselves. I am a firm believer that penalties are a direct reflection of the coaching staff. On the other hand, I don't remember many (if any) false start penalties, impressive in the Metro-shitter.

In the end I am not ready to throw the towel in on this team because, despite the very obvious deficiencies the games are winnable. Working to correct (or at the very least to bandage up) the problems would be the difference between winning and losing the games.

I look at it this way. We played lousy, they played good, and we still could have won the game. Lee dropping the TD pass turned out to be huge because we had no problem moving the ball.

I agree with those here that site the combination of Rodgers holding onto the ball to long and the O line problems. He has got to do his part with the situation the way it is now. I know of at least three times he could have dumped the ball over the middle for a positive gain but took a sack.

On the one hand we have issues that just have to get corrected, period, or we go no where. On the other hand I agree that by week 8 we could be 6-2 and right in the thick of it.

I will be interested to see what the Vikes will look like after a torturous run of Baltimore, Pittsburg, and us at home. I think Favre will have rough sledding after that trying to bring it home the last half of the season. I figured he would be good to start the season but I'm not sure he can hold up for the entire year. Remember, not getting beat up last night was an exception as he was getting hit pretty regular up until then.

I can see a late season falter that always seems to haunt the Vikes.

Every team is challenged during the year and going into a well-timed bye week this team has to make the corner now. We do and Rodgers has shown he will make the scoreboard look like a slot machine.

What did we have 466 yards of offense? We killed ourselves. Even with the terrible olineplay, we moved the ball and got into position to score, only to screw it up. 1 fumble -3, 1 int -3, 1 dropped TD -7. Even slight improvement at T and we will be good on offense.

Defensively, we sold out to much for the run, which limited our pass rush, putting to much pressure on the zone coverage.

Still think the team is closer than it appears.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

It has been said by others so I won't repeat it. There are more problems with the team than the OL. It is a good place to start but they need to keep going.

This is not a playoff team. This team is an 8-8 team. The poor play on both sides of the ball (missed assignments, bad routes, poor tackling). The penalties. mental lapses. They are not consistent. Playoff teams show a whole lot more consistency than GB has shown this season.
Drives stall because of penalties. The defense plays well for a down or two and then gives up a big 1st down to keep the other offense on the field.

I think THE most important thing is to fix the O LINE. Our Defense would be fine if and only if our O line improves. We need our offense to get in the rhythm and that will will motivate the Defense and we would be better off.
