Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy caught their players off guard on Wednesday when they cut Aaron Rouse only three days after hed started at safety for the Green Bay Packers.

The Packers general manager and coach, respectively, made the surprise move after Rouse committed several big errors while filling in for the injured Atari Bigby last week in the Packers upset loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

The move puts the Packers surprising decision to release safety Anthony Smith at the end of training camp in a bad light, because if they would have kept Smith, hed have been better prepared to start than recently acquired Derrick Martin or special teams core player Jarrett Bush, who is more of a cornerback. Bigby is expected to miss at least three more games because of a knee injury.

Yeah, definitely surprised, linebacker Nick Barnett said of Rouses release. Any time somebody gets cut after the second game of the season

Thompson replaced Rouse on the 53-man roster with a street free agent, Matt Giordano, 26, who worked out for the Packers on Tuesday. The fifth-year pro started six games for Indianapolis over the past four seasons and was cut at the end of training camp this year.

The move suggests the Packers regret cutting the free agent Smith instead of Rouse, who missed the final three preseason games because of a hamstring injury.

In practice and preseason games, Smith showed an ability to play the ball he intercepted Cleveland quarterback Brady Quinn and Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner but he occasionally played outside the scheme. The Packers also questioned how well Smith would function over the long season because of a recurring groin injury.

The St. Louis Rams, the Packers opponent this week, picked up Smith immediately after final cuts.

This was not we choose one guy over another and now we are going back on that, McCarthy said. That would not be accurate. Whether thats your opinion or not, Im just telling you what the facts are.

Things do happen. Where we were a couple of weeks ago and a number of new elements that enter into this discussion part of (it was) the people that we worked out on Tuesday. Thats just the way our personnel department has always operated. There are some moving targets that you are always looking at in the personnel side of this.

The Packers clearly were deeply dissatisfied with Rouses play last week and thought it signaled a lack of development for a third-round pick from the 2007 draft.

Rouse also had a series of short-term injuries that had sidelined him, including an ankle and hamstring that kept him out of seven games during his first two seasons, and the hamstring injury in camp this year.

Against Cincinnati, Rouse made nine tackles but also had glaring errors on several key plays. Those included taking a bad angle on a screen pass to tight end Daniel Coates, who converted a first down on a crucial third-and-34; leaving his deep zone on a flea flicker that allowed a 44-yard pass to Chad Ochocinco; and being caught unaware when Chris Henry broke open behind him for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

In our conversation with him, I just felt that his ability to be consistent and the growth part of it is one of the reasons that we made the change, McCarthy said. But there are other factors involved based on availability.

The Packers might have to start two backup safeties this week, though starter Nick Collins chances of playing look decent after Wednesday's practice. He sprained his clavicle against Cincinnati and couldnt return, but on Wednesday he felt good enough to participate in part of the padded practice.

I anticipate Nick will play, but the week (of practice) will answer that question, McCarthy said.

Assuming Collins can play, the Packers still must get Martin, Bush or Giordano ready for the Rams.

Bush replaced Collins last week and remains an alternative. Martin is only in his third week with the Packers they traded offensive lineman Tony Moll to get him from Baltimore at the end of training camp and the Packers considered him an upgrade from Smith at safety.

Considering the 5-foot-11, 200-pound Giordano just joined the Packers on Wednesday, he presumably would be the least likely to start.

Game-planning wise, we can get away with (starting Martin or Giordano), because we cut down to a certain amount of plays for the game and pretty much everyone can handle it, nickel cornerback Tramon Williams said.

If it was the size of the playbook, no way he can come in and play and know everything. But they cut down everything, and we run it through our practice and you can get the calls down. We do so much film study, almost everything weve done at practice in the same set and same situation will be the same thing in the game. If you can get it down at practice, you can get it down in the game.

If the 5-10, 198-pound Martin starts, it would cap an especially big week for him. On Monday, he missed all team functions because his wife, Alexa, gave birth to their daughter, Harlow. When he came to work on Wednesday, he was as shocked as anyone to see Rouse was gone.

First thing you want to know is what happened so you dont make that same mistake, Martin said. When you dont know what led up to it, you really dont know what to think. Thats pretty much why I am where I am, (by always asking) what can I do to stay out of that position?

After reading this, I think it makes sense and is a good article.

I think Barnett is trying to follow in the footsteps of Favre with his diarrhea of the mouth (and Twitter).

All I can say is I hope Bigby and Collins get healthy and stay healthy. Sounds like we have zero depth at safety. In the meantime how bout we move Kamppy to SS?

ya like I said - I wasnt impressed with rouse last year - he wasnt doing bad this year but I felt if they cut him; probably best. That is if they got someone better.

I did consider smith better then bigby and rouse but whatever smith issue is done.

With Rouse being cut at this point, and with what appears to be short notice. I expect that they like what they have seen with Martin, and that he is ready to go now. A couple weeks and hopefully Bigby and Collins are both 100% and both these new guys are ready and waiting.

Rouse was one of my favorites, I was impressed with his size and thought he would do well....

Really wish we still had Smith though.

I would rather have these injuries and questions now (when the schedule is the weakest) then later on in the season when we play some really tough teams.

As long as Collins is healthy I dont think we will be that bad off. Now if we havet o start two backups at the saftey position i think things could get ugly real quick.

Although technically this is grammatically correct, this would make his old English teacher cringe.

Zero2Cool (28m) : I guess 3 games. Whatever
Zero2Cool (43m) : Bleh, that only impacts two games.
Zero2Cool (50m) : Packers are gonna get 3rd place division schedule next year.
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Kanata, seek help! lol
beast (3h) : I was rooting for the Bears to win and hurt their draft pick status
Zero2Cool (3h) : Forgot there was even a game last night haha
TheKanataThrilla (4h) : That was terrible.
TheKanataThrilla (4h) : Watching that game in its entirety yesterday is proof positive that I am a football addict.
beast (4h) : And horrible time management multiple times... and not being able to score more than 3 points on a team with talent
beast (4h) : Realizing the Bears didn't fix it from the previous week and do the same thing, getting the game to overtime
beast (4h) : They probably are not tanking, but they've absolutely mismanagement some things, such as Vikings seeing the Packers blocked FG and realizing
Zero2Cool (5h) : Crazy of Bears to have that mindset that is
Zero2Cool (5h) : Hail Mary stop away from 5 - 2. Not sure how that flips to tanking. Crazy mindset if true
beast (6h) : I've quietly questioned if Bears are tanking on purpose... they suddenly got a lot worse with some simple concepts like 101 clock management
wpr (8h) : Watching bares fans melt down over how putrid their team is, so enjoyable. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Mucky Tundra (15h) : The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears 6-3. Jason Myers had 6 RBIs for Seattle while Cairo Santos had 3 RBI for Chicago
beast (16h) : Not nessarily, he might of been injured either way. He's playing about 50% of the games the last 4 years
Zero2Cool (23h) : If they'd been more patient with him, he'd be back already. Putting him out there vs Bears caused him to tweak it and here we are.
packerfanoutwest (23h) : well this is his last season with the PAck, book it
beast (26-Dec) : Sounds like no Alexander (again), I'm wondering if his time with the Packers is done
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : Could ban beast and I still don't think anyone catches him.
Mucky Tundra (26-Dec) : Houston getting dog walked by Baltimore
packerfanoutwest (25-Dec) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas!
beast (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (24-Dec) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
