Mike Tanier has an excellent article over at Football Outsiders about all the various looks shown last Sunday by the Packer's new 2-4-5 alignment. You thought they were playing a 3-4...think again.

Very good article. Very deep, but very cleae as well.

He appears to think that we'll be running the 2-4 a huge amount of times, though. I think that this'll be something we won't see too often. Of course this is our standard nickel formation, but against a better running team or a team that we can just have a LB on a TE, we'll be seeing a lot more 3-4.

We haven't even seen a whole lot of 1-5-5 last week. Something I expect to see a bit more of as well, when we need to surprise a defense. And I'm not talking about Jolly just standing up as a variation of the 2-4, but us coming out with 5 linebackers.

The announcers need to read that. We saw the 2-4-5 look quite a bit during the preseason, then the announcers kept calling it the 3-4, but surprised that only 2 men had their hands on the ground. Was pretty funny to listen to. I don't know if the 1-5-5 is meant for surprise, as much as it's a situational package, and just wasn't needed last week much. I don't like the 1-5-5 because I don't think we can get as much pressure with it, much more of a prevent style defense in my eyes.

But what you haven't seen, you can't prepare for. I think that it's great for pressure, just not for run stopping. You can overload one side so easily. You can get 5 LBs on the field, of which 3 are nothing more than DEs who have the ability to drop back.

Just think of the different LB personel you can bring in. 3rd and 12 and you bring in Raji with his hand on the ground, then 'behind' him you have Thompson - Matthews - Barnett/Bishop - Chillar - Kampman. With 5 guys in the secondary as well, the blitzing options are endless.

Then, on 3rd and 5, you come out in a little more conservative package. Pickett with his hand on the ground and 'behind' him Matthews - Hawk - Barnett - Chillar - Kampman for instance.

In addition, I really like the amount of sacrificing done in this defense. You really can't have selfish players in this defense and that exactly fits our personel. I was especially impressed by the amount of times that Kampman just sacrifices himself to get someone else to the QB. Can't wait untill the game tomorrow to see how we'll get to Palmer behind that leaky O-line.

I like this alignment, it puts more athletes on the field. When they want to get pressure, Pickett is not the guy to have in the game. He is a great fireplug, and holds his point great against the run, but he really doesn't get the push needed for pass rushing.

Once we get Raji fully deployed into this offense, we are going to see even more options. Can still use the 2-4 look, or a real 3-4 with Jolly,Raji,Jenkins. This will give more options that should help keep player fresh with more substitutions.

Part of using this formation, very well might be spelling Pickett since Raji was inactive for the game.

The selfless attitude is very refreshing. Each player seems to realize they have a chance every week to get playing time, so they have to bring their A games during meetings and practice, not just gameday. Seems to me everyone took to heart some lessons from last year. That it isn't just a single player that made the team 6-10. I'll give Mike McCarthy credit, he really has that locker room under control.

This blitz works because the offense doesn't know which defenders are attacking, and the ones who do blitz execute a perfectly designed stunt.

This is probably my favorite aspect of Capers' D. You don't know what's hitting you. It's like boxing a guy with four arms.

This guy (the writer) really knows his stuff. A refreshing read.

Mucky Tundra (1h) : But to say they are in is looking past the Saints
Mucky Tundra (1h) : That said, their odds are very favorable with a >99% chance of making the playoffs entering this week's games
Mucky Tundra (1h) : Packers are not in and have not clinched a playoff spot.
buckeyepackfan (2h) : Packers are in, they need to keep winning to improve their seed#.
Mucky Tundra (11h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (11h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (11h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Or ties, but let's be real here
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (14h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (15h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : Agreed; you stinks
Zero2Cool (21-Dec) : I'm not beating anyone. I stinks.
Mucky Tundra (21-Dec) : rough injury for tank dell. guy can't catch abreak
beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating

wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
