Wasn't he battling an injury last year also? Groin maybe?

Sure... and how about the late part of 07'... or this preseason.. or the best one I heard repeated last season it was the coaching staff and scheme..

Sorry... not buying into the Hawk excuse-o-matic.. he is a solid steady player but sadly over-rated compared to hype.

I heard all of them last season.. I see a guy that sits on his heels, reads the play slow and then reacts.. not a on his balls of his feet, aggressive and playing downhill..

Well, we are playing in a different system now. Zone/blitz might give him some more freedom, weird as that might sound. I can imagine that you have to hang back, waiting for the back to release and go into a route. Whenever that happens, you have to get of your blocker. Something he didn't do too well. Maybe that plays around in his mind and makes him wait for a bit before he comes up and makes the play. Just a wild theory.

Anyway, we'll see what he'll do this year. I hope that he excels. He should at least be able to pick up some linemen that get through and let Barnett have some space to make the play. Not the flashiest job, but if that's what he does best, we might as well utilize him that way.

I have to disagree with you. Bishop hasn't played enough to give up a ton of plays. I don't really see how bishop is limited to his speed. Why? Because he is a ball hawk. He has good hands, hits hard, brings pressure. Not too mention he brings energy. Bishop gets better every time i see him play.

"cheeseheads123" wrote:

Well if you watched last year he was the reason for a good number of long runs or long passes.

Bishop isn't a ball hawk and he's speed is limited because guys can run around him and beat him... it's like Poppinga and Bigby have trouble going against faster guys...

friggin' ingrate gets like 15 LB's to my 1 o-lineman and still finds a way to get his bitching in.

totally kidding.

He knows who this is directed at.

Hawk has not been the problem for the Packers and no Bishop would not be better. Reason Bishop looks good is because he plays in preseason. He gets playing time during the regular season and yes he has blown coverage. Hawk has an issue with lateral problems like covering TE then again not all linebackers are made to cover. LB's are always looking for help covering players because they are players that stop run plays and blitz. Hawk is fine in our line up. Hawk over Bishop anytime.

I really want to be high on AJ Hawk, but am still having a tough time with it.

All I see from him is blown coverages and tentativeness attacking runners. Is he declining or an I overly critical?

If I were in charge of the line up right now, he'd be playing behind Bishop. I'd much rather have the fiery players on the field.

Very over critical...

Bishop is flashy... because he makes flashy plays... but he also gives a ton of them up...

Hawk makes the least mistakes on anyone on the defense other than maybe Woodson and Jenkins.

Bishop is very limited to his speed and makes more mistakes than any of the ILBs.

Right now I say Hawk and Chillar should be the starters.... Barnett should keep recovering and learn how better technique to keep guys off him... if possible Bishop needs to get faster and stop making mistakes.

Yes and I get one backer whom is aggressive and they choose to play the higher paid players ahead of him...

Bishop has been playing in the drop zone and has made a number of instinctive plays this preseason compared to the silent hop on the pile from the former 1st round pick..

I will say this, playing a straight man up coverage puts all these backers at a disadvantage... even more for the heavy footed Bishop.. but this is a different scheme... where I see Bishop struggling a little is the mental assignment part of the defense.. but to say he isn't instinctive is a mistake in my part.. if anyone on the defense looks to be lacking instincts it is Hawk himself.

Seems like he has to see the play, diagnose it, then reacts.. very little "feel" for the game.

He's kinda like the Terminator. He moves pretty slow, but you'd better not let him catch you!

Yeah instincts are like a mode of no thinking just 100% attacking and I agree Hawk might have the biggest problem with that on the team... in fact when he seemed to have the most instincts was before he got to the Packers. I think the coaches and/or really hurt him...

As coach Moss said he thought more about where he had to be in the system than just plain out making plays.

But that said I still say Hawk as the best ILB and Bishop as the worst... though really I have no idea where to put Barnett yet because he still need to come back fully... then I'll rank him...
