I thought of this idea on the Jeff Garcia thread with some people arguing that there are no obvious candidates for the Packers to cut and sign a third quarterback. Whilst pondering who the Packers could possibly cut, the players that immediately came to mind were those who will contribute little on game-day, barring injuries, so I thought i'd have a stab at the 8 game-day inactives.

Firstly, presuming everybody's fit:

LB Brad Jones
FB Quinn Johnson
CB Brandon Underwood
C Evan Dietrich-Smith
DE Jarius Wynn
RT Breno Giacomini
WR Brett Swain
LOLB Jeremy Thompson

Secondly, considering the injury report:

DT B.J. Raji
RB Brandon Jackson
CB Will Blackmon
LB Brad Jones
FB Quinn Johnson
RT Breno Giacomini
C Evan Dietrich-Smith
LOLB Jeremy Thompson

I think Dietrich-Smith is a pretty obvious cut, to pick up any player(not just a QB).

Also curious to see Thompson on both of your lists.

The only player on the first list I ? would be Brett Swain. They did not keep him and cut Ruvall to have him inactive on Sundays.

Swain is one of those special teams guys that seemed to have made the roster over more talented(at a certain position) player. I'm am not saying Ruvall has more talent than Swain, I am saying for example keeping 3 fb's probably cost Martin a spot, which I see you have Johnson as inactive, I am thinking one of the other fb's will be inactive(Kuhn?), instead of Johnson.

Tough to say who would replace him though. Probably Brandon Jackson who I see you have on your 2nd list(injury).

Unless Aaron Rodgers goes down(please no), I don't see any player being cut to pick up a backup qb.
I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

These are for week 1 only, players like Derrick Martin and Clay Matthews will be in later.

No injuries:

Quinn Johnson
Brett Swain
Evan Dietrich-Smith
Jarius Wynn
Brad Jones
Clay Matthews
Brandon Underwood
Derrick Martin

With injuries:

Brandon Jackson
Quinn Johnson
Brett Swain
Evan Dietrich-Smith
Jarius Wynn
Brad Jones
Will Blackmon
Derrick Martin

massey: Good thread idea. I agree with both of your lists, with one exception: I think Aaron Rouse will be a scratch even if he is healthy, because we don't need five safeties and he's number five at this point. I would put Jeremy Thompson on the gameday roster instead, because if both him and Brad Jones don't suit up, we're left with only three OLB's--unless Spencer Havner can play that position, but if he has, he sure hasn't spent much time there. I think they will have him concentrating more on his TE duties from now on.

buckeye: I think Brett Swain was kept because he is about as good as Ruvell Martin and has more upside, but third TE Spencer Havner is more important to the special teams than Swain is, so he will probably get the nod on gameday.

Also, I don't think they kept three FB's in order to sit two of them. Last year we only had two FB's on the roster and I think they were both active every week that they were healthy. They are also two of our best special teams players.

I agree with you that the Packers are not likely to cut anyone to pick up a third QB.

The gameday inactive list cannot die quickly enough for my tastes. If it takes going to an 18-game season to ensure its demise, so be it.

well now you're making it sound as is if playing 18 games were a "necessary evil" if it led to getting rid of the inactive list. What fan wouldn't want two more games!?!?!

I'm not terribly eager to see two more games because I think we're going to see a disproportionate rise in injuries. No longer will players be skating through the preseason with but a couple quarters of play -- now they'll be out there on the field the entire game.

Now if rosters are expanded to help compensate for the increased risk, and that drives down average NFL salaries, I'm all for that. People like Seymore and Crabtree (who, not coincidentally, share the same agent) holding out for more millions in an era when we have almost 17% unemployment and underemployment annoy the piss out of me.

I wonder if the NFL goes to a 17 or 18 game season if the international series would take up one of those games. For instance a team could play 8 home and 8 away games and one at a neutral venue.

Outside of London, Germany (who kept afloat NFL Europe until its demise), and Mexico I wonder what other sites could host games - maybe US cities without a franchise?

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?

Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
