I dont understanding cutting Ruvell Martin for some guy out of San Diego State (that conference is a joke in college football). How do you think this will hamper the packers going to the 5 WR set (fab five)? Cause I don't believe Brett Swain has the same WR skills as Martin.

With the emergence of Finley, who now sometimes takes snaps at #4 or #5 receiver, Swain (or Martin if he was retained) offers a lot less to the Packers. So I don't necessarily see any downfall with a 5 WR group (or 4 WRs and 2 TEs).

Yep, Swain didn't take over for Ruvell. Jermichael Finley did.

I'm still sad to see Martin go. Martin and Smith were the two eye-raisers for me, but I guess we'll see if this was the right call or not...

I say this has no effect on the fab five... cut a vet poor WR to keep a young poor WR. Not much change.... Also as already talked about Finley could of taken a role in the fab five so the 5th WR wouldn't be a part of it anyways. Also I don't think it's smart to judge a guy in the pros from how good his college conference is/was. He's not in college no more... that don't matter... what matter is what happens on the field and Swain has more upside and raw talent.

the 2 two te's make it all worth it to cut martin. we should be fine at receiving. Passing should be the least of our worries this year.

Those are the colleges where our other four receivers attended. I wouldn't judge the quality of the player solely on the program they came from.

In all honesty, I don't really see the attachment to Martin. Don't get me wrong, as he was a great teammate and has made a few nice plays over his 3 seasons in Green Bay. But lets be honest here, when has he ever been a serious threat to move up the depth chart in our receiving corps? He's always been that solid #5 guy that was always kind of sitting on the roster bubble, but usually still made the team because none of the other young receivers behind him did enough to take his spot.

Martin probably lost his job more than Swain took it from him and I bet dollars to donuts his muffed punt against the Titans was the final straw that broke the camels back. Swain showed improvement over his rookie season, did a decent job returning punts, and even played some emergency CB when we were running out of healthy bodies against the Titans.

After 3+ seasons in Green Bay, Martin really didn't do much in his game to take that next step and pretty much has hit his ceiling as far as what he's capable of doing in the NFL. He probably will have a chance to latch onto another team looking for some help at receiver, but he's probably never going to develop into a starting caliber NFL receiver and will always be a #4 or #5 guy on a team.

The goal is to put together the best football team and not have the five best receivers.

The reality isn't whether or not Martin is better WR than Swain because he is, it's whether or not Swain is better than most No. 5 DB's.

That's the test this year, but Green Bay could still go four wide and it's a matchup problem especially if Jermichael Finley is out there at TE or lined up in the slot which he's capable of.

Losing Ruvell is tough, but if it means keeping a guy who can still beat the No. 5 DB while contributing a lot more on special teams, then the move will pay off then.

+1 to Porky for being the most objective poster here. Whenever I am on the fence on a topic, I usually agree with whatever Porky says.
