Bishop was a observer for most of practice today.. Mike McCarthy gave some type of "bruised toe" reason.

One has to think that maybe trade talks are swirling around Bishop and they are playing it safe?

One really has to believe that they are going to try and garner some value in the tough cut downs around the linebacker positions... the above is probably just a wild speculation (or hopeful) on my part that we capture value in one of the "hard" decisions.. even if it is a player I hope we keep... lol.

If they are contemplating a trade at the ILB position it would be my bet they would consider AJ before Bishop. The problem with that is value vs. production when you look at Hawk's salary.

I see no way DB not being a part of this team. They are going to get him on the field ESPECIALLY now that he also shows ability to cover in zone.

I would rather see AJ moved.. but I think he will be a hard sell to another team, as you stated contract wise.

But I can see the Packers looking at all avenues to try an recapture some value in this cut down.. as we have some players that will be let loose that will be playing on Sundays in the near future in another city..

I have been very open on my views on the linebackers.. especially with Hawk.. so I am in the same opinion WarHawk.. just thinking that they might be trying to recapture some value is all..

I've been wondering about Desmond Bishop and the implications of plugging him in ahead of Hawk. Just a week or two (or three? Can't quite remember, the last few weeks have been kind of a blur), there was an article about Hawk's workout habits and how people have kind of doubted his abilities his whole life.

He's had to go work hard and prove them wrong. This is a man who has historically risen to the challenge of those who bet against him. So, why not bench him?

Give Bishop a fair shot. Get Hawk good and pissed off, and (hopefully) let him rise to the occasion and get a real good competition between the two. Hawk has been the de facto starter since April 29, 2006. Letting Bishop take the field with the 1's on Friday might be the perfect way to light a fire under Hawk's ass.

edit: great article. I agree with your assessment of the coaching staff. The team has been playing with a fire that I haven't seen from them in i-can't-remember how long, and they've been doing it right out of the gates. it's been awesome. So, consider this my formal thank-you note to you, Kevin Greene.

I am more inclined to believe that Barnett might be the odd man out. I routinely hear that the type of injury that Barnett suffered (Ligament tear) can take a year or more to fully recover from, physically and mentally.
I snowboard alot and have lots of friends that have had the same injury, and they tell me it takes a long time to get to the place where in your head you are not scared of doing it again and that your knee will be there when you are (in this case) making a cut, changing direction.

It appears that they'll start Hawk and Barnett and then sub Bishop and Chiller in for the nickel package.

I don't see them trading anyone. They need as many linebackers as they can get in the 3-4.

Lets think this one out... 9 Backers is probably the limits..

Locks
Kampman
Chillar
Matthews

Probables
Hawk
Barnett
Bishop
Thompson
Poppinga

Bubbles
Lansanah
Havner
Jones

I think one or two of those probables may be moved for the the special teams and potential of the lowers.

And if you have a team calling you looking to give you value in return.. odds are you move the player.

So ask yourself, of all the players on the Packers defense whom would garner the most value via performance on the field, salary and be open to being moved?

Again.. wild speculation.. but a team making an offer for Bishop and offering value in return isn't out of the question.

I think they'll keep ten.

They'll keep Havner because he can play two positions and special teams and I think they'll keep Brad Jones who has been practicing well from what I heard on tv.

Though Jones could be a practice squad candidate.

Awesome! This is what I like to see. Good stuff.

Bishop will not be traded. I think they'd have to know for sure that Barnett is capable of succeeding in this defense before entertaining any trade offers with Bishop.

IMO Bishop cannot replace Hawk. They are different style players. Hawk is bigger, and better suited to run blitz, and take on the lead block allowing Barnett or who ever to clean up with the tackle. That extra 10-12 lbs is a big difference in that aspect of the game.

I think Hawk has gotten a raw deal by a lot of fans. Sure he hasn't been spectacular, getting his name in print like a Ray Lewis. But he has been consistent. I look at him a lot like a NT or FB. Does the dirty work allowing others to get the headlines and highlight reels spots.

I was about to say the same thing. In the 3-4 one of the inside linebackers is used to take on the lead block while the other gets the glory. Look at Bart Scott and Ray Lewis, Scott used to be do all the dirty work and Lewis would clean up. Same with our 2nd stringers with the blitz. Lansanah would always be the first to blitz taking on the block, while Bishop would run through the line free.

After the Cardinals game I must say this team is looking mighty good. I have a hard time not getting too excited so here it is: THE PACKERS ARE FAR AND AWAY THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFC NORTH AND WILL RUN AWAY WITH THE DIVISION!!!

Not sure about that. Chillar started in Barnett's spot over Bishop. To me that puts him as #3 on the ILB depth. Can't see him being traded unless someone makes a great value offer for him.
