Packers are ranked FIRST in the NFL in total penalty yards. 1st!

Unfortunately, McCarthy does not think the lack of focus or discipline is a problem. (Yes he actually said that.) "That's just the way we play. " is another gem from McCarthy when asked about the penalties.

"MassPackersFan" wrote:

I've heard him say a number of times that he's ok with the aggressive cover penalties etc. but finds the false start, etc. penalties unacceptable.

Anyway, for a coach to conclude that the problem is focus or discipline is a cop-out, in my opinion. What do you do to address a problem as general as "focus"? Feed the players ginkgo biloba? They all know their jobs.

"IronMan" wrote:

A BIG problem this year, IMO, is how long the Frost experiment lasted. Hear me out....

If you are a player on that team, and you see a guy perform horribly every week, with the coaches making excuses for him, would you have ANY reason to fear for your job? If poor play is acceptable for one player, then it is acceptable for everyone.

Had they cut him after a few shitty games, that would have at the very least sent a message to the rest of the team, look, if you don't produce, you are gone. Instead they had too much pride, and Frost hurt the team not only with his play, but bringing down morale as well.

Now again, this is just my opinion; but I strongly believe that EVERYONE should be held to the same standard. And when you start allowing one guy to continually hurt the team every week with no consequences, then it WILL affect the play of others. Players need to have at least a degree of fear for their jobs. And that fear will not be there unless EVERYONE is held accountable.

"RaiderPride" wrote:

Well, first of all I doubt there is a a Packer on this team that feels like they can play like crap and expect no consequences. Secondly, I think McCarthy is a good coach from the standpoint he DOES stay with players and let's them work thru rough patches. YOU nor I see the whole body of work like a coach does and you can bet McCarthy has a line in the sand on each of his players.

But if you think any player on that team is thinking "well, Frost got an extra month so can I" you can bet that's about the last thing they are feeling. For sure the ones NOT playing particularly well.

The word on Frost was that he hung a few more weeks than he would have because he was practicing extremely well and the coaches felt it would start to carry over into games. It's actually rather strange that he could be so good during the week and suck like that on Sunday especially considering his history was so solid.

I think these are the events that took place leading up to Frost's release and that EGO played no role in this. I don't see Mike McCarthy playing guys because he had named them a starter over somebody else or because they brought this guy in an let that guy go.
I believe that if Mike McCarthy thought Mason Crosby would be the best Right Tackle in the next game you can bet MC would be playing RT.

But he wouldn't do it until fist considering what that move would mean in terms of improvement over the entire season. There's a reason starters are starters and the others are want-to-be-starters and that's because the first guy is a better football player.

Not always. The person who immediately comes to my mind is not on the Packers, but on the Niners. Being stuck out here, I end up catching more Niners games than Packers games. :(

Anyways, it took 2 years for Niner coaches to realize Shaun Hill's a better QB than what they had. He started the season 3rd string and it took a combination of injuries and horrible outings by the others for Hill to make it to the playing field, whereas he immediately showed he's the only Niner QB that deserves to be starting in the NFL.

so what I'm getting at is Coaches don't always make the right personnel decisions, even though they're right there on the field watching in practice and in games. Saw this all the time in high school and I have little reason to believe it's that much better on the Pro level. Look at QB position for example. I think you and I could both name 10 QBs off the top of our heads that it took Coaches longer than it should have to realize who the starter should have been.

What he is saying is that the starters are generally better than the backups. You can't tell me that our backups are better than our starters.

Is Ruvell Martin better than Greg Jennings? Is Justin Harrell better than Ryan Pickett or Johnny Jolly? Pat Lee better than Charles Woodson?

My point proven. By the way, I wasn't trying to be an ass hole about it, just putting my opinion out there.

Go - No, I know and for the most part I agree with you.

I was just saying that usually they're right but sometimes they're wrong.

Here's where our Coaches were right and I was wrong - Nick Collins. I was really upset with Collins in '07 because I watched a bunch of times INTs go right into Collins' hands and he drops them. Then Rouse comes onto the field and immediately gets himself an INT.

Well, come '08, Nick Collins is an entirely different beast, leading the NFL with 3 INTs returned for TDs. I was very glad that I was wrong and the Coaches were right and we stuck with Collins.

Now, here's something I don't understand. Brandon Jackson every time he touches the ball shows a little bit of flash. Yet, he's barely on the field. Is it possible that our Coaches aren't using him enough? I'm not implying Jackson is better than Grant - I'd much rather have Grant protecting Rodgers than Jackson on a blitz pickup, but for pure running, Jackson has shown flashes and this year, Grant isn't quite '07 Grant.

We have a problem at the running back position...and it's who should they put in and when. If they could find an effective way to play both of them an equal amount of time, we'd be set and ready to go. But obviously, they don't know how to do that...

Yeah, I really don't agree with getting rid of Mason Crosby. It needs to stop now.

"RaiderPride" wrote:

Perhaps I worded this wrong. To make it clear I am not throwing a young kicker under the bus. He did lead the NFL in points already once. I have always defended just about any player because it is the NFL, there are only 1,800 players and they had to be good to get there.

I was just pointing out three interesting stats. The Packers should not be 27th in FG % between the 30-39 yard line.

Perhaps he has been rushed, the snaps were not perfect, or his holder did not get the laces out? I do not know.. My point is we need to get a kicker to nail those. Perhaps, and I hope Crosby is that kicker.

"go.pack.go." wrote:

Saying you're not throwing Crosby under the bus doesn't make it the truth. You ARE throwing him under the bus when you cherry-pick 30-39 yds to be Crosby's measure of performance. Why not 40-49 yds? Because Crosby's stats this year are much higher from that yardage, and wouldn't support your case, that's why.

Are we ranked 27th for number of field goals attempted from that range or for field-goal completion percentage from that range?

A thousand yards in penalties is truly a mind-boggling statistic. Consider the fact that the Packers have 5134 yards of total offense this year (342.3 YPG). Tack on an extra 1000 yards and you're averaging 408.9 YPG -- second in the league only to New Orleans.

We've had penalties equivalent to almost three full games of offensive output!

"RaiderPride" wrote:

924 penalty yards to be exact... with one game to play. And Yes 27th in field goal percentage between the 30 and 39 yard line.
