good news. what i was hoping for.

McCarthy has made it a priority to set get his starting offensive line settled as soon as possible to promote the early-season cohesion the unit line has lacked in his previous years, so theres a good chance hell determine his starters at right tackle and center for this weeks dress-rehearsal game at Arizona. The early returns suggest this will be the best group of linemen hes had to start a season.

I think our line is good, General Manager Ted Thompson said Sunday. To be successful in this league, you have to be able to run the ball. Time will tell. Certainly the coaches have done a good job getting the guys ready.

The two decisions McCarthy and his offensive coaches face are whether to start Jason Spitz or Scott Wells at center which in turn will determine whether Spitz or Josh Sitton starts at right guard and whether Allen Barbre or Breno Giacomini starts at right tackle.

The best guess after three weeks of camp is that Spitz will be the center, though Wells has had a good training camp despite coming off a serious shoulder injury last year.

the rest of the story, but of course

It doesn't say that McCarthy has announced a decision, but rather that his decision ought to be clear. I am thrilled that Sitton and Barbre have stepped up. Thrilled, I tell ya!

Not so fast Bozz. Babre will be left tackle, but I'm not so sure Sitton wins his position. You cannot whiff on blocks at this level and he had two against Buffalo. I like Spitz at center and Sitton at RG because of the power game, but not at the expense of a missed assignment decapitating the QB or running back.

Really where does Cliffy go?

But I agree, Sitton has got some clean up to do on the right side.. might take him some time, but watch for TJ Lang to make a run at playing time later this season.. his footwork is advanced for a young feller.

I'm hoping for Giacomini to show a lot of progress. Especially as the year progresses. I know that McCarthy wants to have more stability throughout the O-line this year, but I can see Breno make a strong push for the RT spot.

I'm still wondering what they're going to do with Meredith as well. I'm not so sure that he won't be taken off of our PS if they try to sneak him on there. He has way more talent than where he was drafted. Sounds like a very intelligent player, as well.

I'm wishing that he'd step in the way Tauscher did. Just, out of the blue, getting to fill in for an injured player and keeping that position for the next eight years, being one of the best pass blockers in the league.

Sitton's missed blocks sure make McCarthy's decision harder. I imagine that he is forced to wait and see if Sitton's awareness will improve over the next two weeks.

This is what I'm looking for most in these preseason games, I want those best 5 playing together in a BAD way!

Ok, following Twitter from practice as always (I know, I'm pathetic), and the tentative set 5 was Clifton, Colledge, Spitz, Sitton and Barbre. But Barbre had false starts in the jogthru AND team, so he was yanked, giving Giacomini more reps with the 1s. Not quite settled yet I guess.

Edit: Starting O-line is Clifton, Colledge, Spitz, Sitton and Barbre. I can sleep now...and I apologize for no link, just following Twitter.
