Like the sounds of this kid in camp.. what a difference two years make in the depth of these running backs... sounds like this kid is put together well and can pass block and catch.. that alone could earn him a spot.

Source of Course...

Green Bay Four of the 10 undrafted rookie free agents to crack the Green Bay Packers' opening-day roster in the last decade were running backs.

Northwestern's Tyrell Sutton has a reasonable chance to become the fifth.

Just as Basil Mitchell in 1999, Herbert "Whisper" Goodman in 2000, Tony Fisher in 2002 and Kregg Lumpkin in 2008 did before him, Sutton has performed far better than the typical free agent.

"Like him . . . I really like him," offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said Thursday. "He's got quick moves with his feet. He's got the big lower body. Bright kid. He's been impressive."

Sutton, 5-foot-7 1/2 inches and 213 pounds, has dispelled the knock that he's a little back. From the waist down, he is built almost like a fullback.

"Pound for pound, that little running back is a strong little dude," said Dave Redding, who coordinates the strength program.

Despite taking as many practice turns as any back in camp due to injuries suffered by Brandon Jackson and DeShawn Wynn, Sutton hasn't missed a minute of work. He also has increased his weight to 213, up 8 pounds from his senior year at Northwestern and up 25 since his record-setting freshman season in 2005.

"I did it so Id be able to take more hits," said Sutton. "But it was more intended to get out of the whole scatback category."

A four-year starter, Sutton ranks No. 2 on the Wildcats' rushing list with 3,886 yards and his 1,244 receiving yards are more than any back. His predecessor in the NU backfield, former Packer Noah Herron, finished with 2,524 rushing and 781 receiving.

Like Herron, Sutton has great hands and isn't afraid to step up against a pass-rushing linebacker. He demonstrated that the second night of training camp by stopping A.J. Hawk dead in his tracks.

"He's not bashful," Philbin said. "Good football player."

Despite his accomplishments in the Big Ten, Sutton wrecked his chances to be drafted by running 40 yards in 4.71 seconds on pro day. The rest of his workout wasn't very impressive, either, and the Packers probably wouldn't have signed him if he hadn't run much faster (4.61) for them in a private workout shortly before the draft.

If Sutton doesn't make it, his lack of breakaway speed might be the reason.

"Some guys are track athletes, some guys arent," said Sutton. "Im a football player. Im pretty sure it did hurt me. But you got somebody chasing you, you got adrenaline running and a lot of things that can make you move a lot faster."

Although Sutton hasn't tasted live tackling yet, he is positive there's a place for him in pro football.

"There's no question about it," he said. "I go out every single day with these guys and learn more and more tricks of the trade. I'm confident, and a competitor."

With the exhibition season about to unfold, Ryan Grant is the only running back with a roster berth in hand. Jackson has been his primary backup for two seasons, Wynn stood out early before getting hurt and the 230-pound Lumpkin is the type of power back that the Packers traditionally have preferred.

Of course, this is a highlight reel, so you can't do much 'scouting' off of it, but his balance and awareness are very impressive. His pad-level ought to make McCarthy very happy as well.

This position is just like our O-line, though. We don't currently have that stand-out elite guy on paper, but we do have some amazing depth. A little too much, actually. I think that Lumpkin is gone or goes to the practice squad, but I'm very interested in seeing how the rest of the competition ends. Hope to see some hard running saturday. Or anything, really, on saturday.

Great analysis, Rock.

Kregg Lumpkin may possess a world of talent, but he's severely injury prone and always has been. Has he ever played a complete season at any level? I know a lot of members here are enamored of Lumpkin, but I say it's time the Packers stop stockpiling injury-prone talent and start accumulating guys who may not be as flashy but exhibit signficantly more durability.

Gee, I'm starting to get worried about other teams pinching our running backs if we leave them on the PS.

Are we really developing some good RB depth, or is it that the 3rd backup onwards revolve in and out with no clear standout?

So many injuries already. So much for the early optimism that the change in training regime would reduce the number of injuries.

I vote that the coaches get these players off that hideous artificial turf inside Hutson Training Center and get them on that new natural practice field. Put a canopy over it if you want to keep the plays away from prying eyes.

Either Jackson or Wynn goes has to go to the PUP list when the seasons stars or I don't think there's space for this guy.

Jackson returned to practice on Thursday and looked great. He'll play on Saturday night. Wynn should be back soon. It's just a bruised knee, supposedly, although you never know with him.

Wynn needs to remember what McCarthy and Thompson said about availability . . .

I never believed it. Injuries are mostly a matter of luck. The Packers had few injuries in 2007 with Rock Gullickson in charge, then they had a whole bunch of injuries in 2008. I think that changing the strength and conditioning coach is mostly cosmetic, or maybe just a matter of getting a guy who is a better fit personality-wise with the rest of the staff. Same thing with special teams coaches. Defensive coordinator is a different story.

beast (13h) : Martha said Morgan had a lot of help, I didn't watch the OL so I can't say.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers LT Jordan Morgan did not allow a single pressure across 23 pass-blocking snaps vs. Jets last night, per PFF
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : With buckeye and the reasonable couple, we're currently sitting at 10
buckeyepackfan (10-Aug) : Just posted to re-up on our FFL.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : If healthy after, then thats all I care. Well, no drops would be nice

dfosterf (10-Aug) : Just gotta figure out how.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Could have been a worse start, so there is that.
beast (10-Aug) : Yeah, someone tell the Packers football season has started, seems like they weren't ready for it
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : Sooooooo many penalties

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress

Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
dfosterf (7-Aug) : out on a field trip, outfitting them with little yellow smocks. Most of the little folk were well behaved, but several were like trying
dfosterf (7-Aug) : Yesterday my wife and I spent the afternoon on the waterfront here in Alexandria, Va. A daycare company took about 15 three/four year olds

Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
