Actually, if you haven't done any in depth scouting of the guy, and aren't listening to any scouts on him, then it isn't realistic at all, is it?

I think that it is more realistic to say that if a 4th rounder has to be a starter on our team directly, that says more about the state of our O-line than his skill.

The first interior linemen went in the 1st round, if this guy is that good, why did he fall 3 rounds? I can see that he's a steal and a good player, but if he's really that good, more people ought to have picked up on him.

Don't get me wrong, I think he can develop into a great player, but he's just to raw for me right now. He has the same arm size and athleticism as Wells, from what I've seen. Most people don't even project Wells in our current starting line-up. He's strong, and I think that with some coaching and training he can be an good guard, mainly in the running game, but I just don't think he can start this year.

Then again, looking at it in my pessimistic and horribly wrong way, Barbre, Spitz and Moll where great projects in their respective drafts aswell. They're ok, but just look at last years line. No outside pass protection and no inside push for the running game at all.

Well, in regards to Wells, I've seen more than one fan say that Spitz needs to be center to get a heavier body in the middle against the big DT's in the NFCN, while Wells and Spitz are listed as nearly the exact same weight on packers.com.

I don't think those O-linemen will necessarily start this year either. I'm just excited about Lang as a prospect. Colledge I was meh on. Spitz and Sitton I'm moderately excited about too. I want scrappy linemen who fight out there in the trenches, and everything I've seen about Lang suggests he's that kind of guy. Plus you can't argue with his size - 316 coming out of college should make everyone who was upset about our 300lb OL smile.

Just to chime in on your debate a bit. I don't think the round a player is picked in matters as much as people say. It's basically first impressions of a player and who they think is going to be better based on those impressions. I'd also like to point out that there were 4 tackles in this draft that could have been taken in the Top 10. That alone says that a tackle in the 4th round this year is probably better than a tackle in the 4th round last year.

I think Lang's school hurt his draft status more than anything.

If Tom Brady was that good he wouldn't of fell either, but he did. In Brady's case it wasn't because of his school, but rather he just didn't appear to project to the NFL. Obviously he does.

Moll was a starter as a 5th. Spitz as a 3rd.

It's not out of the question that Lang will start. I think the coaches would probably hope he emerges as the starter. The offensive line is an easy position to transition from college to pro.

I have two projections

LT: Chad Clifton
LG: Daryn Colledge
C: Jason Spitz
RG: Josh Sitton
RT: T.J. Lang

My other projection would be

LT: Chad Clifton
LG: Jason Spitz
C: Scott Wells
RG: Josh Sitton
RT: Daryn Colledge

As far as the state of the line. That all depends on the improvements guys like Sitton, Spitz, and Colledge make.

You forgot Meredith ... IMO he was the steal of our draft (a steal at the 5th round) - he should of went in the 2nd or early 3rd.

Dont get me wrong I'm glad we have Lang also ... nothing like 2 solid big OLmen to add to our lineup. I feel better for arod already and our running game.

Good news.

So who is left to sign?

Raji, Matthews, and who else? I can't think right now.

Good point. Maybe it's mostly related to the fact that Johnson is much more likely to be a starter this season than Lang.

Packers Sign Rookie Offensive Lineman To Four-Year Deal
Posted by Aaron Wilson on July 7, 2009 5:45 PM
Fourth-round offensive lineman T.J. Lang has signed his rookie contract, the Green Bay Packers announced today.

No terms were disclosed.

UPDATE: According to a league source, Lang signed a four-year contract that included a $502,500 signing bonus.

It includes base salaries of $310,000 in 2009, $395,000 in 2010, $480,000 in 2011 and $565,000 in 2012.

The deal also contains a fourth-year escalator clause that can raise his compensation in 2012 to $1.308 million depending on his playing time.

The versatile former Eastern Michigan plays guard and tackle.

Not missing a start in his final three college seasons, Lang started 26 games at left tackle and 10 more at right tackle.

Now, the Packers have signed five draft picks out of their eight-player rookie class.

Per Lori Nickel of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Lang has drawn praise from Packers coach Mike McCarthy.

"I think Lang has really made some big steps since he's been here," McCarthy told reporters last month. "He seems very natural at playing either tackle or guard and that's something we've had a number of players be able to come in here and do that at the offensive line position. That's the way you're able to go from the 53 to the 45 and be able to play on Sundays.

"That's something he's shown right away. Athletically, there's days I thought he was a tackle, there's days I think he's a guard. So, that tells you about where his flexibility is physically. Very happy with him."

I needed to study this kid last night.. I am undoubtedly impressed with this kid.

Technique wise.. very solid player.. uses his arms well, sets up in a firm base and moves his feet well. Excellent balance.. like I said I am impressed with him.

Jump in competition and may need to get a little stronger.. but I love this pick now.. after about 10 minutes of "who" with the list of players left in te draft.

I might go as far to say, in a couple of years of experience under him.. I think we have a multiple time Pro Bowl type player in Lang.

Did I say I was impressed. :)

BTW.. my wife is glad draft weekend is over.. I have an expanded Honey Do List after I became "lost" in the weekend.. lol. She said, last night was the worst.. because I kept watching clips and murmuring to myself.. I even dreamed about this crap last night.

I need a new hobby.. lol.
