Joe Philbin was talking about getting the offense ready for this season and mentioned that they would be practicing against the 3-4 now that we employ it and that will benefit the offense when they go up against teams that will be using the 3-4 against us.

Seeing the 3-4 all the time in practice will help us for sure considering three of the toughest games we play are against Pittsburg, Dallas, and, Baltimore, and they mentioned five total teams we will face using the 3-4.

Didn't really think about that but we will be much better prepared against those teams now. The 3-4 teams have been hard for us in the past and that's because we just don't see it that often.

Better prepared for 3 - 4 teams and not so prepared for 4 - 3. There's a draw back to it too.

they'll still run a scout D similar to what they'll face each week, Zero.

They did the same against 3 - 4 defenses the years prior too. 🙂

But many of our guys should be pretty familiar to 4-3 schemes, no? From the past year or two?

exactly. the scout guys will almost certainly be more familiar and comfortable running a 4-3 than a 3-4

Everyone has been rejoicing that we're going to the 3-4 defense because our defense was "too predictable" last year. Well, Ross Tucker has an interesting perspective: he says that as an offensive lineman, he preferred to play against 3-4 defenses because they were MORE predictable  than 4-3 defenses!

With my team, the Packers, going to the 3-4 along with a few others, do you think the 3-4 really offers what people say it does: better run defense and better run stopping than the 4-3? And during your career, did you find it harder to block and plan against a 3-4 defense than a 4-3 defense? Basically, what's it like as an o-lineman vs. the 3-4?
-- Thomas DeCaro III, Albuquerque, N.M.

If executed correctly and with the right personnel, a 3-4 offers a better run front and more options from a pressure standpoint.

The key to the 3-4 from a run perspective is having outside linebackers who can effectively "set the edge," which really means stuffing the tight end or the offensive tackle from outside-in and forcing the runner to cut back inside toward the other six defenders who are maintaining their proper gap discipline.

As for the offensive lineman's perspective, it really depends on the position and the player. Personally, I preferred going against 3-4 defenses. If the defensive lineman is attempting to "two-gap" the offensive lineman by holding his ground and controlling the gaps on either side, he's usually not penetrating into the backfield, and that's really what I was most concerned about because a quick penetrator can really make you look bad. I liked the predictability of the 3-4 defense, which is usually so fundamentally sound that opposing lineman can anticipate technique and don't have to worry about the unexpected.

I believe McCarthy says he cuts his playbook in about half when facing the 3-4 and says it creates more difficulty for him when making out his plan against it.

Yeah, I don't think there is any question that a 3-4 can be less predictable. Perhaps its easier to predict what people on the defensive line will do, but that's probably not what they should be worried about. Offensive linemen should probably be worried about the people rushing off the edge, or coming up the middle, or from anywhere else possible!!

Well we mentioned that we will be facing Pittsburg, Dallas, and, Baltimore all teams with the 3-4. They dont seem to be hurt too bad by the 4-3 😃
