The NFL is trying to take an extremely common tackle (a form of wrapping up really) out of the game.

So you think tackling is bad now... just wait. More NFL assistant to the offense, on it's way.

So what is it that the NFL is trying to banned? As talked about in the bottom of the quotes

"It is to grip; it’s to rotate and drop."

Gripping and dropping are absolutely essential to any and all wrapping up tackles... so basically the NFL is just banning a defender "rotating" which is wrapping up your opponent. So the NFL wants less wrapping up, which means more broken tackles on the way.

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/nfl-wants-hip-drop-tackle-outlawed

The NFL wants the hip-drop tackle banned for 2024, and the Competition Committee, with a meeting scheduled for Thursday, is discussing it.

The tackle, which the NFL says increases risk of injury by 25 times the rate of a standard tackle, has taken out some high-profile players this season.

Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith and most recently Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill are among those who have been injured by a hip-drop tackle.

“I think we all should work to get that out of the game,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday at the NFL owners meetings in Irving, Texas. “You see it escalated the number of times it occurred this season. The injuries could be very devastating. We saw that also: It’s not just happening at the NFL level; it’s happening at other levels. It’s something that we have to work very hard to get that removed this spring.”

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is ready to vote for outlawing the tackle. He saw his running back, Tony Pollard, fracture a fibula and require surgery to repair ligaments in his ankle after being tackled from behind on a hip-drop tackle by 49ers defensive back Jimmie Ward in the 2022 postseason.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes played through a high-ankle sprain after being taken down on a hip-drop tackle by Jaguars defensive lineman Arden Key in the 2022 postseason.

The National Rugby League in Australia banned the tackle because of the injuries it causes. Despite talk about a possible move to do the same in the NFL last spring, neither the Competition Committee nor any team offered a proposal regarding the tackle. The league ultimately decided the tackle is hard to define clearly and enforce consistently.

Now, though, the league has changed its opinion and stance about the tackle.

“I think we have to [ban it] now,” NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent said. “I think a year ago when we actually drew the hip drop or a version of the tackle that we were seeing on video, there were some clubs that had no clue what we were talking about. Just never saw it. In their mind, they never saw it before and don’t teach it. Others were not actually teaching a version of it with the intent of injuring the player but [teaching] versions of the tackle. All of this is in that family of when we saw the hawk tackle and people adjusting to getting the head out of the game.

“One thing we can do today is define what that is. It is to grip; it’s to rotate and drop. Those three things show up on that play, and it’s a gruesome play.”

Probably the "conspiracy theorist in me here. I wonder how many of these rule changes for safety are reactionary to the concussion lawsuit years ago. It feels like they're over compensating in a way. I'm not sure if it's out of spite or trying to protect their wallets, or both. Almost the cut off your nose to spite your face.

And then owners are all let's add 7th playoff team. More money. Let's add 17th game and cut one preseason game! More money. And leads to two preseason games and 18 week season. The TV revenue from two extra NFL weeks is massive compared to the two preseason games.

The NFL should have guys watch some videos, attend conferences and sign a waiver. Let football be football.

The NFL was getting absolutely hammered with that message, so they quickly and randomly came up with the new fair catch rule, which as a few pointed out, would of only changed two in season concussion from the previous year. And the previous year only had a massive concussion rise due to the preseason, where guys were making errors and trying hard to make a play to make the team when normally they would play it safer in a real game.

But 1,000% as the article talked about, this is about protecting the STAR offensive players... not the players... just the star ones that they have invested higher amounts of money in.

Basically a PR/Money move to keep the Stars healthier.

Also talk about how they might look into the XFL (whom have/had a contract with the NFL to test new rules the NFL wanted to see) but look into possibly taking the XFL method of kickoffs which is basically (other than kicker and returner) guys line up 5 yards away from each other, near the returner and can't move until the ball is caught (or hits the ground).

The NFL is not as entertaining as it used to be with all these dumb new rules. It was never meant to be a soft sport and anyone who was playing knew that as well. Just compare today to the Favre and early Rodgers days. I am not as attached to it as I was.

The NFL is not recognizing the alternative of more head on collisions and poorer tackling.

Notwithstanding the forgoing, it has been and can be used as a dirty way to take guys out. My son's team had a running back taken out because of blatant attempts to injure as some of the attempt at the hip drop were from larger players who, had they just hung on or run through the tackle would have taken the player down.

I guess I am not sure what the best course of action is.

Just another rule to allow the refs to decide the outcome of the game. I can see the ticky-tack flag now giving a team an automatic 1st down and the game winning drive instead of a punt.

If I firmly place on my tin-foil hat, I would say this just helps the outcome the gambling cartel wants.
