Playing soft coverage and prevent D while only up a FG or less. This has been going on for soooooo long and the out come has been the same mostly. With all the genius coaches and advanced analytics out there, why hasn't anyone figured this out yet? Giants were scoreless all the 4th quarter and all it took was 3 plays and they win. When will coaches step in and say there is no place for that on my field? Why havent they figured out that it is the worse scheme that is still continued to this day?

god i hate Joe barry.

All I know is if MLF is even a half decent coach, he will call Joe into his office Tuesday morning and tell him to rip out any soft 2 min coverage D from his playbook. But we all know that ain't going to happen...

Without starting calibre corners, it isn't that easy, but moreover I agree with you.

What was especially glaring with our soft coverage was the lack of pass rush.

Gregg Easterbrook made a long, lucrative career out of ridiculing prevent defense (and punting instead of going for it on 4th down), and his Tuesday Morning Quarterback column was pretty compelling reading as a result of it. But the reason coaches use the prevent defense is that statistically, in the grand scheme of things, it works more often than it doesn't . Fans only remember the spectacular times it fails, but they forget all the losses that could have been prevented by playing it.

Trust me, I hate prevent defense too. I hate the whole concept of "bend but don't break" with a burning, fiery passion. But just as fans foolishly glorify the triumphs of the gunslinger while overlooking his inexcusable failures, so also they fixate on the prevent defense's failures while ignoring its many successes.

And that's not even getting into the fact that the term itself is vague, ill defined, and perhaps even undefinable .

I've never much liked the three man rush, or playing soft coverage. I want my defense to be dishing out the hits, not being passive.

The "prevent" is something I can tolerate I'd you're up by 8 points or more because you keep them in the middle of the field and eat up clock. Plus the onside kick is super hard to execute now. When the enemy has multiple timeouts and only need a FG to get the win? Nope. You play aggressive.

I'd rather take a loss going out swinging than taking a loss with my tail between my legs.

When you give a QB time to pick you apart. That's what will happen.

For a TD, it makes sense. For a FG with a min and a half and timeouts remaining, makes no sense at all and im sure the fact that teams who go soft or prevent more likely allow the opposing team to get in FG range then not. U cant tell me any different. I've seen it numerous times for all teams.

Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : That might be it for the Vikings
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Oh so the refs do know what intentional grounding is
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : what the hell was that Goff?! Not much pressure and he just air mails it to Harrison
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : They really need to to get rid of the auto first down for illegal contact
Martha Careful (6-Jan) : watching the Vikings and Lions it's understandable why they swept the Packers. So much better product
Mucky Tundra (6-Jan) : Even when GB got pressure he was throwing darts; vs no pressure on that last pass he just air mails an open guy

Mucky Tundra (5-Jan) : Pats have the #4 pick, lots of cap space and Maye at QB; should fetch some attention
Mucky Tundra (5-Jan) : Well that didn't take long; Jerod Mayo out as Patriots HC
Zero2Cool (5-Jan) : I would expect it to be higher in favor of Eagles
Mucky Tundra (5-Jan) : Thst line seems...generous
Zero2Cool (5-Jan) : Eagles -3.5 over Packers in Wildcard Round
Mucky Tundra (5-Jan) : Did it though? Pokes beat the Commanders on the road with Cooper Rush previously
Zero2Cool (5-Jan) : That gives them their best chance

Mucky Tundra (4-Jan) : Stinks for Lloyd. Hoping he comes back strong for next year
