I've been reading the comments in the Fan Shout box. I can not recall ever respecting Mel Kiper or Todd McShay. Last year I heard that Brendan Donahue does a pretty good job with his mock drafts. According to The Huddle Report he's the most accurate mock drafter over the past five NFL seasons.

I went to his site Sharp Football Analysis  to see who he has the Packers taking.

He picked Lukas Van Ness EDGE out of Iowa.

The Packers tied for the fifth-fewest sacks in the NFL last season so they will look to upgrade that unit with a prototypical Brian Gutekunst draft prospect.
Lukas Van Ness measurements:
6-foot-5

272 lbs
11-inch hands
34-inch arms
84-inch wing span
Most importantly for Gutekunst in a first round selection, a 9.35 RAS

It seems like it is a possibility. GB has taken a few Iowa boys over the years. He has a decent RAS. They have a need for an EDGE rusher.

It's interesting that Donahue has 4 QBs selected first.
There are also a couple of CBs going before the Packers pick. That means there will be a lot of decent players to chose from.

While others are looking at OT, I am not as interested. Bak is still there, thi year. Yosh has been re-signed. (It's only 1 year.) Toms might take a step this year or next year. Jenkins might slide over to OT. We don't know if developmental players Sean Rhyan or Rasheed Walker will be ready next year. So I want to see them look elsewhere in the first round.

Perhaps TE Mike Mayer.

He put up impressive receiving numbers at Notre Dame  but it was his run blocking that was equally as impressive and it makes him maybe the most complete tight end in the class.

Yes please.

Myles Murphy, EDGE, Clemson

One scout was quoted as saying he “couldn’t have had a better (private) workout” and reminded people why he is number three on Bruce Feldman’s “freaks list.”

Perhaps.

There are a few WR to keep an eye on.

Something else I found interesting is that Donahue had GB selecting Van Ness all 5 times even though other players were taken ahead of him.

I love it!

Wouldn't mind Mayer either.  Lot of TEs in this draft, albeit lower tier.

Van Ness is extremely interesting, he reminded me of a stronger but less athletic (watching film he looked less athletic, test in shorts might say otherwise) TJ Watt.

My big issue with Van Ness, is that he only had one move... the bull rush (of your only going to have one, that's a great one to have as you can pass rush or control the run with it), and he's basically perfected it (Kevin Greene would of absolutely loved to coach Van Ness with the bull rush) but in the Pros he's going to need more moves.

In the pros, even a prefected move becomes less valuable of the other guy knows it coming every single time.

Also Van Ness was a DT two years ago... probably can't be there full time in the pros, but he probably could sub in as a pass rush specialist on long 3rd downs at DT.

But in this drop 7 in zone coverage system we're running, we need NEED the front four to win!

Edge
~ Gary (recovering from injury)
~ P. Smith
~ Enagbare looked great for a 5th round pick, get beat blocks, not as athletic as one would prefer but he can get pressures

DTs
~ Clark had an average year, which is extremely down for him
~ Wyatt looked like he had a ton of potential
~ Slaton seemed to step up well

Need more DL with Reed and Lowry leaving

Peter Shrags (Scrhags?) is usually decent in regards to his picks in round one actually being picked in round one.

I think if people think Packers should take a TE at 15, they should have their head examined. Or we should take that as an indication this draft class is pathetically weak. Which if the latter, then trade down ~10 or so picks, add maybe 2nd and 4th round and hope more shots in the barrel improves chances of finding someone useful.

Most years I would agree with you to not take a TE but not this time.
If there is someone who is considered to be elite, a need and the player is within the talent group of other players when the Packers are on the clock, there is no reason not to select him

Count me in the camp that needs her head examined!

Tight end is an absolutely key position in Lefleurs offense and not having at least two strong TE greatly diminishes his ability to run what he wants to run.

Especially this year, they should take one who is a can’t miss, likely pro-bowl caliber, tight end. and I hope they take Mayer.

I do believe they are quite valuable with being able to block and catch and sometimes fill in at the FB position.  I still say if your board shows best available player to be a TE at 15, you drop backwards. Unless he's the last Round One player you got on your board. You know what they say about situations --- they're situational!

BUT I am the same guy who was pissed the Packers traded with Patriots and then took Greg Jennings when they could have had Chad Jackson. So, when it comes to heads being to be evaluated ... I'm probably first in line.

Yes he was coming off injury, but they never designed any plays for the TE. So frustrating.

ESPN (assuming Mel Kiper Jr) top prospects. You can see the TE's with their overall prospect rating for this draft class. I forgot I have ESPN Insider with some Disney bundle thing.

If you get the chance it makes sense to step away from the traditional thinking to get a player like that. Then there was Kellen Winslow Jr who was supposed to be one of those players. Cleveland took him 3rd and he ended up being a major disappointment to them. I guess that is why teams put together their boards and see who the players are that fall to them when it's their turn.

As far as dropping back, the better GMs will only do so IF there are multiple players that they ranked equally on their board. Unless of course another team throws a boatload of picks their way.
