I think this whole draft will be centered around what and when they get the deal done with The Jets.

I am sure Gute has his board set up, and has a plan for any situation.

The success rate(signing a 2nd contract) of 1st round picks is less than 50%.
QB's success rate is 39%.
Looking at this years draft, if 5 qb's are drafted in thec1st round only 2 will be with the team that drafted them for a 2nd contract.
1st rnd wr's and te's are next on the list.
Edge and lb's are at the top.
I really hope The Packers trade down, not out of the 1st round and pick up more bullets for the holster.
There are plenty of te's in this draft.
Wouldn't be surprised if The Packers draft 3.
3On the other hand I wouldn't have a problem if Gute takes the kid from Notre Dame at 15.

I keep seeing people say this. If TE is such a key position in Lafleur’s offense, then why the hell has he hardly ever used them? I don’t know how many times I saw Tonyan just run a 1-2 yard route and turn around and wait on the check down this past year. Yes he was coming off injury, but they never designed any plays for the TE. So frustrating.

Another huge factor is that the Packers have been running a hybrid scheme, some of LaFleaur's scheme, some of Rodgers preferences of MM's scheme, and MM's scheme doesn't highlight the TEs nearly as much.

What's so important to the Wide Zone (Shanahan, McVay, LaFleaur) offensive scheme is versatility of players to give them multiple options to run different type of plays out of the same looks or formations. As TEs are naturally asked to be more versatile, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a TE. As they used Lazard (and that's the reason some thing the Packers might be getting WR Corey Davis from the Jets as he was used like Lazard).

But looking at the wide zone across the league they usually have a blocking TE role. They also have a large slot role which is normally filled by either a receiving TE (49ers George Kittle) or a large/quick WR (Rams Cooper Kupp). (No this is not the role Lazard filled, not quick enough for it). The Packers really have not had that guy, other than using Adams there at times.

But to properly run the wide zone offensive, they need players that can stay on the field and they can go into almost any formation, from a 3 wide look to a one TE and one FB look.

In theory Dugara is a player that could be out wide or line up at FB, but how talented is he?

They don't necessarily need TEs, but they do need versatility, and be able to line up guys in multiple roles, which is it happens to natural fit TEs more. But Gute also (wrongly) drafted Amari Rodgers with the idea that he could be a WR or RB versatility.

Got a young QB, just starting out as The Man. Get him a dump off target who can find an open spot and get some yards after the catch.

Hell, find three of them.

I’m really not buying the blacking tight end versus the receiving tight end argument. You need good tight ends that can do both. Other than Marcedes Lewis, NONE of our tight ends black worth a damn.  Along with the lack of movement from our offensive line, our short yardage runner, attack stinks, which, in turn negates the play action pass effectiveness to the tight ends, which are so important.

what makes Kittle and Kelsey so special is that they both block very very well and are strong receiving threats.

I can't remember a TE who was drafted in the 1st rnd that became a top notch player.

There is a kid from Old Dominion that has a perfect 10 RAS.

The draft is a crapshoot, that is why I am hoping for a trade down to collect more draft picks.

Buckeye, you make some excellent points.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, this isn’t a particularly strong draft at many positions, and on a relative basis, tight end would seem to be an area you would want to draft.

Draft strength = Our need

So let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth and be thankful that we are in a position to add there.

Further, we probably need to draft two and will need them to play relatively quickly, so you can’t do the usual trade back and take the best player available. This team simply does not have that option.

Perhaps in normal years, you would want to trade back, but I fear that if we trade back too far in the draft, we will be stuck with some slug who can’t block and is a three year project.
Go Packers!!!!
