The general story as a whole, I can buy it that the owner was assuming Rodgers would play for multiple years and then got scared, etc etc.
But some of the more specific issues, like the Rams situation worrying the Jets owner ... the Rams won a Superbowl! If the Jets won a Superbowl the fans would be okay with dismantling it... as they were last in the playoffs in 2010, losing to the Steelers whom lost to the Packers in the Super Bowl.
The Jets went to the playoffs in 6 of Woody Johnson's first 11 years owning the Jets and then 0 out of the last 12. And he's not a young man... one would think he's itching to win again and Woody himself has stated he's "anxious".
I could be totally wrong, but I feel (just feel, don't know) that the Jets are just using Woody as an excuse trying to play hard ball, like maybe he refuses to give up a 1st. But I think Woody badly wants Rodgers.
Also, if this entire story is to be true, then they're already given up completely on Zach Wilson, which previously the story was they want a vet QB for like two years and Wilson will be ready by then.
And there are so many ways around this, such as
Packers get the Jets picks between #20 - #51 so if Jets make the playoffs, Packers get a 1st rounder, if the Jets don't, then it's a 2nd rounder. (Or if Jets must reach the 2nd round of the playoffs then picks #24 - #55)
Or Jets give the Packers two 2nd and two 3rd... that actually might be more value than the 1st and 3rd.
Or Jets give the Packers three 2nd picks, which I'm surprised some NFL.com mocks had mocking the Jets giving both their 2023 2nd round picks to the Packers for Rodgers, which is odd as that hasn't been rumored and usually official news network mocks are conservative with trades and either just doing what's publicly rumored or not doing them at all.
Or hell, offer the Packers your 1st, 2nd and 3rd draft picks from 2025 if you're truly set in going fully all in the next two years. And if there isn't a trade before the draft ends, then maybe that's what they'll do, trade picks from the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
But the Jets already have Zach Wilson, I doubt their eyeing Rodgers and drafting a QB in 2024, unless they're ready to get Wilson (which they claim they're not, but you wouldn't say otherwise even if you were)
I feel like there is more to this, that we'll probably never know.
