How did Mel Kiper grade other drafts, and how did they turn out? Does anyone have stats from 4 or 5 years ago? Im curious to see if the teams he gave A a while ago, actually were good, or vice versa.

Mel Kiper had these things to say...

Green Bay Packers: C
The Packers had to take quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first round. You just can't pass on the opportunity to get Brett Favre's heir apparent and give him some time to learn from one of the best passers ever, even though he won't help them win this year. Corner Nick Collins is a good athlete but very raw and was a reach in the second round, and while receiver Terrence Murphy is a nice player Green Bay didn't need a receiver. Safety Marviel Underwood was a solid pickup in the fourth round but linebacker Brady Poppinga might not be a good fit in the Packers' scheme. I like receiver Craig Bragg in the sixth round but there is just not enough defensive help in this class.

2005 - Green Bay Packers
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 24 Aaron Rodgers QB California
2 51 Nick Collins FS Bethune-Cookman
2 58 Terrence Murphy WR Texas A&M
4 115 Marviel Underwood DB San Diego State
4 125 Brady Poppinga LB Brigham Young
5 143 Junius Coston C North Carolina A&T
5 167 Mike Hawkins DB Oklahoma
6 180 Mike Montgomery DT Texas A&M
6 195 Craig Bragg WR UCLA
7 245 Kurt Campbell CB Albany State (NY)
7 246 Will Whitticker G Michigan State

Detroit Lions: C+
Give the Lions credit for going away from their biggest needs to take receiver Mike Williams, who was clearly the best player available at No. 10 overall, but you have to wonder if they got enough help for the defense. Williams gives Detroit perhaps the best young receiving corps in the league but defensive linemen Shaun Cody (a versatile end/tackle combo) and end Bill Swancutt (a one-dimensional pass rusher) may not be enough of a boost up front. Coach Steve Mariucci has to hope he can develop some accuracy in tall quarterback Dan Orlovsky, corner Stanley Wilson is an average player and end Jonathan Goddard will likely move to outside linebacker.

2005 - Detroit Lions
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 10 Mike Williams WR USC
2 37 Shaun Cody DE USC
3 72 Stanley Wilson DB Stanford
5 145 Dan Orlovsky QB Connecticut
6 184 Bill Swancutt DE Oregon State
6 206 Johnathan Goddard LB Marshall

Minnesota Vikings: B+
The Vikings targeted speed on their board and they definitely got it with wide receiver Troy Williamson, who wowed Minnesota enough that the Vikings passed on Mike Williams. Defensive end Erasmus James gives them much-needed help up front, guard/tackle Marcus Johnson will solidify the offensive line and running back Ciatrick Fason has the potential to be a terrific steal in the fourth round. Dustin Fox is a good cornerback and defensive tackle C.J. Mosley is a motivated overachiever.

2005 - Minnesota Vikings
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 7 Troy Williamson WR South Carolina
1 18 Erasmus James DE Wisconsin
2 49 Marcus Johnson G Mississippi
3 80 Dustin Fox DB Ohio State
4 112 Ciatrick Fason RB Florida
6 191 C.J. Mosley DT Missouri
7 219 Adrian Ward -- Texas-El Paso

Chicago Bears: A-
Cedric Benson has all the makings of a star running back and Mark Bradley fills a need at wide receiver while also bringing excellent special team skills to the table. Getting Kyle Orton gives the Bears a nice backup who will fill in capably should quarterback Rex Grossman go down again. Receiver Airese Curry made sense in the fifth round and the late-round safeties could become contributors as well.

2005 - Chicago Bears
Rd Sel # Player Position School
1 4 Cedric Benson RB Texas
2 39 Mark Bradley WR Oklahoma
4 106 Kyle Orton QB Purdue
5 140 Airese Currie WR Clemson
6 181 Chris Harris FS Louisiana-Monroe
7 220 Rod Wilson LB South Carolina

Look at this... it looks like the Packers had the best draft over the long term but got the worst grade.

You can't look at the "instant" draft grades in terms of projection upon the team.

But as a PR tool in building hype for the season.. it has some value.

Personally, they are fun reading what the talking hairpiece and others have to say.. but in terms of actual predicting the prospects going forward they are a joke.

There are way to many variables in the process of a player joining a team for someone to utilize their measurable's, 40 times, workouts or college production to becoming a success in the NFL. Things you can measure inside the person and the situation they are entering to predict it...

Kiper is a brilliant lucky man though.. he has little to no accountability and is world famous for it. I need that type of job. :thumbright:

Kiper forgot to factor in the franchises when grading those drafts, i.e. the Bears can't draft skill positions worth a crap and Detroit and Minnesota are just horrible failures, other than the occasional short-lived spark from Minny.

The good grades are nice, but only because this really does look like a good draft for the Packers. It seemed like a lot of players fell to them.

I enjoy reading draft grades, but what most of them do is simply judge how well the teams filled their needs. That's why GM's with a BPA approach, such as Thompson up until this year, usually get bad grades. It's a very limited way to judge a draft, but it has the advantage of being the simplest, hence its popularity. A writer has only to ask two questions: "What did they need?" and "Who did they get?" and then compare the two and Presto! Instant draft grade. No research required.

Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
