According to Tom Pelissero, Sony’s Hawk-Eye technology will be used by the NFL as the primary method for measuring the line to gain, beginning with the 2025 season, the league announced. The chain crew will remain on the field in a secondary capacity.
What does this mean? It means instead of people walking out to measure off 10 yards, they will now use some kind of technology. However, the measuring of 10 yards was never the issue. It's always been the spotting of the ball. And that is not being changed.
Some mention putting a tracker in the ball to spot the ball. This won't work because of the shape of the ball. They would have to put two trackers in each ball and then calculate the difference. That's right, it COULD be done, but I wouldn't bet on it until 2027 at the soonest.
