It's too bad that a player who is a day 3 prospect may not even get drafted. He will lose a lot of money.

How sad. A guy having his dream shot down before it even began.
He may get a shot once he heals . But it's got to hurt bad.
I hope he had insurance in case of something like this happened.

I believe if someone goes the entire year unsigned, in theory they can join the draft the following year (as has been talked about should a 1st rounder ever refuse to sign and wait the entire year out). Though to my knowledge it's never been done.

From an agents perspective, I think they might prefer the UDFA option, as they get to pick the team and in theory could get two or more teams to have a bidding war (unless some sort of limitations had been put in UDFAs signing)

I have not researched it but I thought he would end up an UDFA losing ten of thousands of dollars on his contract and signing bonus. Money he will never recover even if he ends up starting and excelling with a team. It's the risk players take when they come in for a look see by various teams. It's either show up and perform or risk not getting drafted at all.

As far as insurance goes, difficult to say. First he has to have the money to pay the premium what ever that cost may be. Next is the underwriting questions. Where does he feel he will be drafted and what would his initial contract be? He would not be able to get a policy to cover him for the loss of income that a top ten prospect would receive. He more than likely isn't up to a day two level so now he is more of a risk to the insurance company. Thus the rate per thousand would be greater while the coverage less. Most kids would bet on themselves and decline the policy.
