The first season ending injury for Green Bay has been confirmed. It's a rough day for the Green Bay Packers  today. Reports out of 1265 Lombardi Avenue indicate that inside linebacker Jake Ryan has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament  and that he will miss the entirety of the 2018 season as a result.
This is a painful blow for the Packers' defense, which was counting on Ryan  to be one of the main contributors at the second inside linebacker spot next to Blake Martinez. Ryan also has played a significant role on special teams in the past. Rookie Orem Burks will likely get the first shot at starter's reps to replace Ryan, but no other I side linebackers on the roster have NFL game experience.
For Ryan, this injury comes at an awful time in his career. This season is the final year of his rookie contract, and he will be an unrestricted free agent next March. With Martinez taking over one of the spots inside and Burks being chosen with a day-two draft pick, Ryan likely needed to play well this year to keep him firmly in the Packers' plans for the long term.
For now, Ryan will most likely go on injured reserve and remain with the team through the season before free agency arrives for him.

It official. I wonder what kind of an offer GB makes after the season.

I have been a Jake Ryan fan since the beginning but I feel this creates a numbers problem more than anything.
This is probably a reason Gutekunst should go outside the organization to add to the roster.
Someone more experienced than what the Packers have at this point.

There are some big names among the vet ILBs still out there, but it's questionable how much they have left in the tank. NaVorro Bowman, Karlos Dansby, Brian Cushing, Justin Durant. Which name wise sound great but their recent play hasn't lived up to their name hype.

There is also Eric Reid and Kenny Vaccaro who played closer to the line last year. Reid in a coverage LB role at times and Vaccaro as a slot CB who worked very well in run defense, though had some troubles in coverage there.

Mike Pettine on what the Packers have at ILB after Jake Ryan's season-ending knee injury: "Certainly, we have an experienced guy and a guy who was very productive last year in Blake [Martinez]. The rookie [Oren Burks] has flashed some things, but the transition from the college game takes some time. Ahmad Thomas has flashed some coverage ability, and then we have some younger guys. We'll see how it plays it. It's a big loss with Jake."

Pettine mentioned that the staff is scheduled to meet and discuss potential roster needs and there's been "open lines of communication with the personnel department."
