In that podcast, Tony says if the Packers called Rodgers and said we're taking this QB to improve the backup position, not to replace you that it would have helped blow some of the steam off how pissed Rodgers was. I agree with this and I believe Gutekunst does as well because last week he said he should have communicated things better.

I have been thinking this for a long time. I almost posted it earlier but let it go. The last time the Packers had a decent QB2 was back in 2011 with Matt Flynn 1.0. After that it has been a real nightmare. Seneca Wallace? Granted a first round pick is a high price for a backup but who says he can't be a backup for 5 or 6 years and then take over the reins when Rodgers is ready to retire?

As was mentioned they were trading up for Jefferson when the vikings got word of it and jumped ahead of them. It was a heads up play by the vikings and SF. The Packers could have moved up one more spot but they didn't think the 49ers would take a second WR in the first round and didn't want to give extra picks to their strongest contention for the Super Bowl.

First draft a qb who is going to upgrade the QB2 position. Then if he pans out as a backup they can evaluate him to see if this could be the eventual replacement for Rodgers years down the road. This is not a one year or two year commitment. It is a 4, 5 maybe 6 year project.

And also this isn't a fact that it was improve the backup position, I believe Tony was speculating on how the GM could have smoothed things over with a little communication.

This is a straight up pissing match. Aaron has been attempting to get his way. The front office isn't letting him, and won't.

That's why they are replacing him. But the replacement isn't ready yet. And it's no coincidence this didn't happen until Boyle was signed by another team.

I would hold the mother of all press conferences. I would remind everyone where we are as a team with respect to the cap. I would tell the world what our extension offer was. I would tell the world what Rodgers asked for regarding his role in personnel decision making, and what we agree(d) to do on that front. I would tell Denver, the Raiders and the entire NFL that they are not getting Rodgers while the contract he signed is still in effect. They can stick trades.and 1st round picks up their collective asses.I would tell Rodgers we want our 23 million pro-rata signing bonus put back on the desk you just picked up your 6.8 million dollar roster bonus check on, and you can put that check back too. I would remind him not to come by weekly for that portion of the 14.7 million he would have received if he did play this year on that contract he signed...you know, the record-setting one in 2018...I would tell him we all thought he was quite good on Jeopardy, go do that,, and we look forward to seeing him play football for someone else no sooner than 2024, and appreciate him opening up all this cap and cash space in the meantime. Alternatively, get your ass back on board a team that cowers to no one, even MVPs

Or something like that. Sorry for any inadvertent hyperbole.

What they could do is give Aaron the extension he wants, then start Jordan Love over him next year. 🤣

Fans would probably freak over it tho.

Open competition in training camp. Won't take much passive aggression for Aaron to take offense, demand a trade. Just sayin.

This way you're covered if Love still isn't ready. Just roll with it another year.

I look at it in a greater context. Sure, they could have kept Aaron in the loop, whatever.

I look at it as Matt and Gutey being sick of Aaron's games. Like the thing Aaron talked about, pranking Matt when he was a first year couch.

They say all the right things, but they think Aaron is being a dick. So they're being a dick right back to him. That's WHY they took Love when they did. That's also why Murphy told Aaron, "don't be the problem."

IMO.

Aaron's been on a power trip since he got Ted relieved of his duties. It's quite likely that Gutey even still has a feeling of loyalty to Ted, and his legacy. Again, IMO.

I personally think Rodgers slept with Gutekunst's wife and said Mario Odyssey sucks. He's playing some dangerous games.

On topic... I'm impressed that everyone manages to come out as an unlikeable d-bag in this situation. Takes some special planning and talent.

I think I'd trade Rodgers after the june deadline if I were in the Packers' shoes. His age doesn't get mentioned enough in this. Or how in any other occupation this'd clearly be labelled as an unworkable situation going forward. Getting (multiple) first(s) for a 37 year old is ridiculous and allows us to build a great supporting cast around a quarterback who's on his rookie contract. It's the ideal situation... If you believe Love will be what you thought he'd be when you drafted him.

If Rodgers isn't gone this season, he'll be gone in 2022... Or 2023 at the latest. Just get some value for him now and set yourself up for a good future.

So, while the pressure on our front office will remain high...fire Gute, Murphy, yada yada yada, the pressure from other fan bases shifts to the front offices of other teams to acquire him. The perfect recipe for a bidding war and us getting the most out of this crappy situation. Based on everything I have seen so far, if this wasn't orchestrated by Kaaron God gers and his agent, I would be shocked. GBP needs to play an orchestra of their own by abandoning the incognito behind the scenes negotiation game and go public. Let's let the media help us cut our best deal.
...And an FYI as all weigh the various options The NFL cap for 2022 is projected to be around 200 million. That figure would put us hard against the cap yet again, making an extension of Rodgers extremely tough on options as regards pending free agents. The big cap rise (relief, if you will) doesn't come until 2023, projected "as high as" 230 million.
