NEW YORK John Madden is calling it quits.

NBC said Thursday that the burly ex-coach who has been one pro football's top broadcast analysts has decided to retire. The 73-year-old Madden has been working for the past three seasons on NBC's Sunday night NFL game. His last telecast was the Super Bowl between Arizona and Pittsburgh.

Since he left coaching in 1979, the former Oakland Raiders coach has worked as an analyst for all four broadcast networks. His "Madden NFL Football" is the top-selling sports video game of all time.

Madden is reluctant to fly and often traveled to games in a specially-equipped bus. He said in a statement that he still loves all aspects of the job, "but I know this is the right time."

That really is a shame. As much as a lot of people seem to hate him, I love him. I think he is a great broadcaster. I guess he's quitting everything way to soon though. An amazing coach with his controller anarchy style. But I'm drifting off.

I'm sure they'll try to get him back for some special games now and then.

I cant say I'm sad to see him go. He hasn't exactly been my favorite announcer. But when you think Monday Night Football(SNF now) you think Madden.

I find it funny the year Brett retires, Madden does too..

Can you blame him? Without his weekly milkshakes, how can he be expected to keep up his "burly" weight?

Hmmm, Favre retires and then Madden follows. Too funny to think about.
He had a great all-around career with the NFL though. He deserves it.

My favorite moment was 2007 where he made a comment about how funny it would be if the QB sneezed when the ball was snapped and all Al Michaels said as a response was ... "hmmm"

It was incredibly funny and awkward 🙂

Was Madden retiring after Brett a coincidence? Maybe so. But maybe not.

Let's be real - NOBODY played the game like Brett, and I think with the recent trends in football, nobody will again. The gunslinger is a thing of the past. It's a shame. And Madden knew it.

Going to miss Madden too. How he'd go off for several minutes on the way sweat comes down an OT's face was classic. Plus, he actually knew everything that was going on in a play. I don't think any other announcer compared with that.

There was a reason he consistently coached winning teams. The guy knew football.

Football won't be the same.
