If you watched all that season Desmond actually could of had i think atleast 3 more returns but got tripped up by the last guy. I did notice you watch him during the returns he wasn't the Devin Hester type and just use his speed and run straight, Desmond actually made cuts and broke tackles alot. He was a joy to watch that year and as Brett said put the Packers over the top that year.

I wish we could get our return game that deadly again.

Desmond Howard could have been the difference in that SB against Denver. We lost that game by 7 points. Had we had Howard getting the ball to the 40 or 50 consistently, it would have been a completely different game. Denver would have been forced to throw and John Elway historically is one of the worst SB QBs ever.

BF was better than Elway in that game. The difference was Coach Holmgren blew that game for us.

History would be so much different had the Packers had back-to-back wins instead of just one win with Favre. I still haven't recovered from that loss.

Howard was a horrible WR but as a return man, he was the best I've seen until Hester came along. Then da Bears in their infinite wisdom converted him to a WR full-time.

Yes, Howard got greedy, but we should have matched the Raiders' offer. Losing Howard and Sean Jones made a huge difference in the '97 season. We weren't the same team as a year before.

Desmond Howard IMHO really blew it. He had a great year with The Packers as a return man. Topped it off with a SB MVP.

He could have stayed in Green Bay, and been a bonified star for a few more years, but like most, the lure of more money got to him.

He signed with The Raiders the next year for around 1M, and pretty much was never heard from again.

Yup....he was NEVER a good WR.
GREAT returner with us.......but nothing more.
Did anyone else notice on his TD return in SB 31 that he was grabbed by the facemask, and it was never called? Whipped his head right around. But he blew it off and kept right going.

1.Well said. Howard got an additional $100K and the promise to be a WR with Oakland. Bad move by Howard and the Packers.

2.In additon, not bringing Sean Jones back, especially when he was willing to play for the minimum was also a bad mistake.

3.Andre Rison wanted to stay with the Pack and was willing to take a pay cut. They should have offered him an incentive laden contract and put oth onus on him.

4.Evans was signed away for $4.5 mill a year. I can understand letting him go.

Personally, I think Wolf got a little "too big for his britches" and over valued the rest of the team he had built. Any one of the moves probably wins us the Denver SB. The first two would have locked it up and would have cost virtually nothing. And all three were very possible. What a shame.

3. Urgh! We could have kept Rison? That was stupid. Rison and Favre played well together.

4. Yeah, Evans wouldn't have been the difference maker.

I think any of the first 3 could have won us that SB.

1. You are right. However, the Pack could have let him have a little more time at WR, give him a chance. Five or six plays to earn more wouldn't have hurt that team. He ended up not playing much at Oakland. The money wasn't very significant, we could have paid it.

2. Jones not being there really hurt. He was a leader. And with our injuries we had to play a DT at DE in the SB. You're right this was huge and most definitely cost us the SB.

3. Most info at the time was that GB didn't want to take a chance on Rison blowing up if he stayed here longer term. He was no problem while he was here, he wanted to be here, he was willing to take a pay cut, and we had good vetran leaders. I think Wolf should have offered him a low, not insulting, contract with a small signing bonus and easily attainable incentives. If he is a good boy we have one hell of a player and he makes good money. If not, adios, not costing much money.

4. Self explanatory.

I agree any of the first three, we win the SB. And we should have been able to do two of the three quite easily, probably all three.

Doug Evans played with the Packers in the Super Bowl against Denver.. The Craig Newsome injury had a ripple effect on that team however.. Newsome was stout in run support and could cover effectively allowing the safeties to play more toward the line of scrimmage... Tyrone Williams struggled in coverage a bit as a first year starter.

The other glaring issue on that 97 team was lack of depth on the interior of that defensive line and linebackers.. Joyner was a shell of himself that year...

I don't believe Wolf got to big for his britches though.. I think we got caught with some depth issues.. a roster can change that quickly in this game.

My bad, you're right Evans was the following year.

Depth is exactly why Sean Jones should have been resigned. I know they used his back as an excuse but I believe that;s what it was, was an excuse. And the other 2 players would have still helped, especially Rison.

I heard Packer players say that Holmgren cost us SB 32.
The guys on the sideline kept telling him to RUN the ball, as Denver couldn't stop us, and he ignored them.
