So, Darnell Savage Jr wanted to change from #26 to #21 and then suddenly went back to #26. Why?

Well, it's because when a player changes numbers mid-season (I think a player can change after the season concludes without penality) the player is required to buy up remaining jerseys. Since X amount of Y jerseys for Savage had been sold, Nike has an agreement with the NFL that the player will buy up the remaining jerseys that have been made.

Mark Murphy explains it a little better.

Here is also an article on the subject.

So it is kind of a timing thing. Sounds like he can switch after the season and be 21 going forward without penalty. So hold off on buying his jersey until next year. And everyone who bought one already, buy another next year! Double the profit for the manufacturer!

First off, that's a huge "if", second of all, how to prove it's an actual rookie jersey from a customized one later on, because you can get any new.and number you want put on. So no they probably wouldn't be worth anything, but the thought just crossed my brain and I wondered if anyone else would have any input.

Like if there would be a way where getting the original number, before he switched might actually be a good thing for some reason.

I would rather see the number removed from circulation for 10-15 years. I came to this belief after Dale Earnhardt Sr passed away. I hated the idea of seeing #3 racing around the track. And then when it came back, when that #3 was on the track, it brought up more and more stories and memories about Dale and I went, wow, if the number carriers on, so do the memories. Otherwise, out of sight, out of mind.

DO NOT RETIRE NUMBERS!

And Charles Woodson does not deserve his number retired, neither did Reggie White.

All super good points. You talked me out of it. But to say Charles didn't deserve it is kind of absurd. He did amazing things for us for what - 6-8 years?? One of the best DBs to ever play.

Reggie White was the most important free agent signing in professional sports history. I repeat....

Reggie White was the most important free agent signing in professional sports history. He re-legitimized the Packer franchise.

He also may have been the greatest football player ever....seriously. It is too bad not all of his years were in the NFL.

IMO he deserves his number retired in Green Bay because he was that important to the Packers.

As for Charles Woodson. I do not think his time as a Packers player merits a number retirement. I also don't think any number should be retired. I watched Charles in college, liked him then and was jumping for joy when Packers signed him. He's one of my favorite players. Hell, I love Barry Sanders and I don't think his number should be retired.

Maybe he didn't deserve it is too strong. I wouldn't have been upset if his number was removed from circulation for 10-15 years. How many times are we going to see the #92 in Green and Gold and have old highlight clips of him? And for what? Why? Why remove his number permanently?

I like numbers being up in the rafters/whatever in the ring of honor to honor them, but keep the number out of circulation only temporarily.
