Do you want him back?

But would he be a good fit with his old team? The Green Bay Packers  added former Chicago Bears safety Adrian Amos already in an attempt to shore up the safety position, but there is still work to do on rebuilding the back end. One name that is sure to come up is Morgan Burnett , who will be released by the Pittsburgh Steelers  after one season, according to Adam Schefter .
Burnett spent his first eight seasons with Green Bay as a secondary utility man, playing everything from corner to inside linebacker. However, he’s best suited for the strong safety spot. Burnett’s not a ball hawk, with nine career interceptions and only two in the last four seasons, but he is a sure tackler and excellent in run support. He started only two games and played in just 11 total for the Steelers as part of an injury-plagued season, and expressed his discontent over playing a hybrid safety-linebacker role. He eventually lost his starting spot to rookie Terrell Edmunds .

While Burnett was one of the better Packer defensive players during his tenure, I hope they seek help elsewhere. His skillset can certainly be useful in the right scheme, but if he’s unwilling to move down into a linebacker spot occasionally, that seriously constricts his value. This is especially true given the fact that coverage was never his strong suit, and as he ages, it will only get worse. Burnett should be focusing on what he does best in the latter half of his career, and that’s going downhill.

It is also troubling that Burnett’s injury issues last season stemmed from his back, and back issues linger forever. While Burnett should be remembered fondly, he will turn 30 this season, and for a team in need of improved pass defense and cover skills, he’s just not a great fit.

I can appreciate wanting to bring Morgan Burnett babk to GB. However at age 30, Burnett is looking at the typical years of diminishing returns. Knowledge and experience just can't add the 1/2 step needed to excel at the Safety position.

I wish him all the best, but don't believe he would make the GB Defense the elite force that the Packers are striving toward. 🤷

I don’t see the Packers taking a step back, except in a “no other choice “ injury situation.

I can't say because I need to hear from the defensive coordinator. Burnett was solid, I thought. He too often tried covering others mistakes or lack of confidence in his running mate.

If DC wants him, so do I. He was a class act in my book.

Do The Packers have any money left to sign Burnette?
Really doesn't matter, Gutekunst is slowly but surely turning over the roster.

Burnette is not one of his guys, he won't be back.

Definitely not before the draft. Can't stay on the field anymore.

The Packers need more of a true rangy free safety. I don't consider Burnett great at that position. So unless he came dirt cheap, I hope the Packers pass.

On one hand, the Packers NEED Safety depth... Burnett (even older Burnett) would do a GREAT job in helping that safety depth at SS, nickel and dime

Also that verstility could give Pettine a lot of creative options in different calls to create better matchup, especially when you also consider Pettine can also blitz him.

(And my personal plug that might free up Jones to move to coverage ILBer which I think is a better fit for him, but don't think they'll move him).

That being said, on the other hand, Burnett wasn't happy as the #2 SS and in the dime role... and if he were returning it might be to that #2 SS/dime role (of course maybe nickel starter role and that might solve that, but he'll be competing with the #3 CB for that). And if Amos can play FS (I'm not sure he can), then Burnett to SS and free up Williams for the nickel or at least rotating them and trying to confuse the QB.

And it wasn't that long ago that Burnett was said to be a leader with the Packers, and I'm not sure you want an upset guy that's looked upon as a leader.

Overall I'd be willing to sign him, though maybe after making sure he's not going to be pissed as a #2 SS that he might have to get playing time via other positions (ie nickel/dime).

But this draft has a stronger number of high potential FS... so I'm guessing the Packers will be grabbing one of them. (I'm hoping for two but that seems unreasonable, those maybe one high one and one lower).

I think he and Amos fill the same Niche on the D. I'd pass unless he'd come cheap and wouldn't mind providing depth and being a utility guy.

Morgan Burnett has served as a former player, but a friendly no thank you on bringing him back.

Whats next , Dez Bryant ? 😒
