To put it another way, if what LaFleur really wants is to be an offensive coordinator, why take the head-coaching gig?

And I'm not completely sure, but I think 6 of the final 8 teams, and 8 of the playoffs 12 teams. Of the four that don't, two are the oldest NFL head coaches (and they're from defense, Patriots and Seahawks), while the Ravens head coach is from ST and Chargers have the only offensive coach that has the OC call the plays.
Edit: Looks like I'm mistake, Jason Garrett is no longer calling plays for the Cowboys. Of course they just fired their play caller too. And Jerry Jones is telling the public he's got to give Garrett an extension because he'd be in such high demand as a FA, despite PFT pointing out the last time he was, there was no publicly known rumors of demand.
This is all about supply and demandTalented OC have so low supply, but such high demand that teams try to protect them from being stolen by other teams, only way to do that is make them the head coach.
This is the way the modern NFL is currently going
I want a head coach who is overseeing the whole team and who trusts his assistants enough not to micromanage. If LaFleur is spending all his time in the quarterback room, how can we be confident the rest of the team is getting due attention?

And how can be confident the rest of the team is getting due attention in the old system? Under Mike McCarthy and Sherman, fans complained about the defense a whole lot.... of course they called plays. But fans complained about the Seahawks offense, and there are calls the Chargers should fire their offensive play caller... so there is no way to be confident other than blind trust and based off results (which currently we have none).
