1. Defense has performed an order-of-magnitude better than last year despite being severly banged up.
2. We have a very good running back tandem. (Although we need more depth) J. Williams is spectacular in blitz pick-up, and more than an adequate runner.
3. We have a terrific wide out. (though we lack depth at a reasonable price)
4. We have an all pro defensive line coming back
5. We have a damn good, if not shut-down corner, and some pretty darn good players on the other side.
6. Gutey's first draft and most of the FA pick-ups have been outstanding.
7. Rodgers had a bad year (yes, this is a positive). If he had had a good year, we still would NOT be going anywhere. Now he has the need to refocus. I think revisiting his fundamentals and being a year away from the shoulder and will enable him to return to excellence.
8. We have an outstanding DC (hope we keep him)
9. With healthy players returning as noted above, there are relatively few holes to fill and a decent amount of money available to fill them....along with a draft.
10. A new HC means a clean start for everyone. People will need to learn together instead of one guy having all the answers.

I sure hope you are right about number 7. The way Rodgers talks it certainly doesn't sound like he thinks he has much to work on. He says he is his harshest critic and that he constantly self assesses. Then he says his mechanics are fine which he would know is bullshit if he was self assessing. He must not think ignoring wide open receivers and holding the ball for 8 seconds is an issue either because he's been doing that for years. Now he's missing easy throws and always brushed it off like it's not something to worry about. He's a guy willing to admit his mistakes but he sure doesn't sound like a guy ready to spend the off-season rebuilding his game.

GBGUY, this post is not aimed at you.

I wonder how many of the posters on this site actually watch football games and see how many elite quarterbacks (Brees, Brady, Goff, et al) miss wide-open receivers and make horrible decisions in terms of interceptions.

Yes, Rodgers had bad year especially in terms of his normal performance level.

and yes, he is paid a lot of money to have great performances.

And yes he is too careful with the ball.

All of that notwithstanding, posters, the simpletons in the press, and those with a perpetual hard on for 12 seem to think that we would actually be going someplace if he had a good year i.e., that HE is the biggest problem.

HE has covered up this team’s crappy drafts, crappy personnel decisions, lack of innovation, and crappy defenses for 5 years.

Now that he has had a sub-par year, HE is the biggest problem....give me a frigging break.

HE is BY FAR the biggest reason we have a great opportunity to get back to a Super Bowl caliber team rapidly.

I greatly appreciate the posters who give critical analysis to addressing the teams other difficiencies and possible solutions.

However, the Packers need to seriously evaluate options for his replacement. It's not Kizer. Learning under Aaron Rodgers for a few years would be incredible for a young talented QB. The Packers have two first round picks. If another Aaron Rodgers situation happens and a player the Packers believe could be another franchise QB, the Packers have to take him. This has little to do with Aaron Rodgers ability the next few years. It's more about the reality that Rodgers is getting older, has some health concerns, and the Packers are pretty far off from having an elite team around Rodgers anyway to truly be serious contenders in the near future.

The Packers need to take the draft as it comes, do their homework, and if a QB they feel could be a franchise guy falls within their reach, they should take him. If not, the Packers will be in a situation of having to reach for someone in the coming years when it's a dire need rather than a luxury developmental pick.

I would like McDaniels as the next coach, but consider the massive contract the Packers gave him last off season, I'm not sure it will happen:

Sub par play was pretty well spread out through the top paid 10 or 12 players on the roster. Out of Cobb, Mathews, Bakhitiari, Daniels, Adams, Bulaga, Graham, Perry, Taylor, Linsley, and Crosby, I can really only give Bak, Adams, and Linsley, passing grades.
When only three guys out of the top paid players taking up over 60% of the cap are earning their keep you have a problem and it's more than one guy.

It's a given to have any chance Rodgers has to play a lot better but Gute has to decide if he has the confidence in these other guys or if some need to go. Cutting ties with Bulaga and Tramon Williams would free up another $11,800,000. I like both of these guys but I like Breeland better and Bryan can never stay on the field. I don't know what they do with Graham and Perry with the cap hits that would mean.

Tough decisions lie ahead but they have some money and draft picks to get better and that's more than you can say for the Bears or even the Vikes who have hardly any cap space at all. Recapturing the North is not that big of a stretch, however, Murphy, Gute, and the staff need to hit the trifecta with regards to HC, FA, and, the draft.
I cannot remember an off season with so many moving parts and I've been a fan for a loooooong time. Kind of exciting and very scary all in one knowing what happens in the next 6 months may very well define where this team goes for years to come.

Might as well be aggressive to make it happen, rather than often being close but never crossing the finish line.

SPOT ON I would give those 3 guys A's and agree with the rest (but not as harsh on Daniels)..

That's why you have play Kizer the last 2 games to help evaluate whether the kid can be the guy. If he isn't I am suggesting the kid from Duke Daniel Jones, is the guy. 6'5" great arm, pro-style offense, and use to playing against opponents with better talent than his team has....just like 12.

One positive going forward I think is the defensive line. Clark, Daniels, Lowry look like a real solid starting group and Lancaster looks like a good backup (was reading about Lancaster and his pre-Draft workouts and I'm surprised he didn't go on Day 3). I know there's been talk about Daniels and his numbers but I've read that Dom's scheme was far more favorable to his sack numbers than Pettines and I don't think it's a coincidence that after Daniels got hurt Sackrell went back to being Fackrell. If Gute chooses to sign someone or draft high to add another piece, the D-Line might be a monster next year.
