http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcnorth/0-9-113/McCarthy-talks-Collins--offensive-line.html

Sounds like the packers are ok with how collins is handeling his 'talks'; sounds like his absence is mainly due to his wife having a baby then. ie just like williams is in negotiations with the pack but is still taking part in the strength training.

Looks like Duke Preston has already visited the pack and will probably be a sure deal if the $ is right and he isnt resigned (do the bills have that same clause where they can match a offer?)

Also its mentioned that spitz and wells will compete at the center job. I cant remember whom I liked better there ...

I'm still worried about our Oline - since the guys are getting older and are having more injuries/surgeries.

There is no draft pick/match required with Duke Preston. He is unrestricted. All I have heard is that he started the last 11 games and "didn't play badly". Maybe I'm paranoid, but it seems to me that guys that are 6'5" and 326 lbs have to have incredibly low pad level to fly under the radar to this point in FA. No wonder MM likes him! Seriously, does anyone know why this guy hasn't been scarfed up yet? If he does not suck, I love his size. No one seems to be commenting on this, but his size and versatility seem like everything I'd be looking for.

maybe he sucks. I don't remember seeing him play, so I can't comment. But maybe he sucks.

Here's a link from a Bills fan that has an in-depth assessment of Preston.

Offensive Line Review: Duke Preston

Some highlights:

Preston while running
The run game wasn't any prettier for Preston. He was on the field for 269 televised run plays. He was rated as good on 24 (8.9%), decent on 148 (55.0%), bad on an astounding 97 (36.1%) and killed 19 (7.1%) for a dismal grade of 69.6%. Ugh. That's actually worse than I thought it would be. Think about that for a moment. Preston was beaten on more than one third of all running plays. He personally killed about one out of every 14 run plays.

Preston while passing
Preston was on the field for 372 pass plays in 2008. Of those, he graded out as good on 2 (0.5%), decent on 344 (92.5%), bad on 26 (7%), and killed 9 (2.4%). That grades out to a poor 69.4%. Some have suggested that Preston showed progress towards the end of the year, which indicated he might grow into a decent center. This wasn't the case in the passing game. In the first 8 games (Preston had significant playing time in three - one of which was the Chargers game which wasn't broadcast in its entirety) he had no good plays, 86 decent ones, 7 bad ones and 4 killed plays for a grade of 73.1%. In games 9-12, Preston had 1 good play, 128 decent ones, 4 bad ones and 3 killed plays for a grade of 74.3%. In games 13-16 he had 1 good play, 130 decent ones, 7 bad ones and 2 killed plays for a grade of 73.6%.

That isn't to promising. Do we have something like this for our guys though? Because I'd like to see how College for instance did, compared to this kid.

Sounds like we are trying to get some depth for cheap. Cheap meaning he's not that great but will provide depth. Nice size thou like dfoster mentioned.

Not the greatest pick but I'm happy with it if it will help keep arod healthy. And improve our running game.

MM said a few months ago that his main objective with the Oline is to get guys into a position and stick to it thoughout the season (not like what happened last year - where he had to move them all around because of injuries etc ...)

So by providing depth we can keep players at their respective position and let the 2nd string man take over when needed.

(least this is what I get out of it)

I thought McCarthy said we need players who can move for our zone blocking. This guy doesn't look like he can move to well at a 326# center.

He's not that old, maybe they feel he has some upside. I wish we had a Pro Bowl type center. I think it is one of the most under rated positions.

There has been evidence of moving away from the zone blocking. I think having Josh Sitton in at guard would be a very evident first step. Moving Spitz to starting center would be yet another. Picking up this guy would be another step. If we do pick up this guy, what's to say he will be back up center, and not backup guard? I think the writing is pretty clearly on the wall that GB is abandoning the zone blocking.

beast (6h) : What is he supposed to say? He doesn't want players currently on the team?
Martha Careful (11h) : meh
Zero2Cool (15h) : Sounds like Walker and Wyatt will be with Packers for beyond 2026
Zero2Cool (15h) : It's so awesome.
Zero2Cool (15h) : new site fan shout post fast
wpr (18h) : Slow posting in Fan shout.

wpr (18h) : Only 4
Zero2Cool (21h) : If only we had a topic to read about and discuss it. That's something new website must have!!!
dfosterf (22h) : Justice Musqueda over at Acme Packing put up an excellent synopsis of the Packers 1st round options this am
wpr (19-Apr) : 5 days
beast (18-Apr) : 6 days
wpr (17-Apr) : 7 days
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : two 1sts in 2022 and two 2nd's in 2023 and 2024
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers had fortunate last three drafts.
dfosterf (15-Apr) : I may have to move
dfosterf (15-Apr) : My wife just told the ancient Japanese sushi dude not enough rice under his fish
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I think a dozen is what I need
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Go fund me for this purpose just might work. A dozen nurses show up at 1265 to provide mental health assistance.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Maybe send a crew of Angels to the Packers draft room on draft day.
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : I am the Angel that gets visited.
dfosterf (14-Apr) : Visiting Angels has a pretty good reputation
Zero2Cool (14-Apr) : what
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : WINNING IT, not someone else losing it. The best victory though was re-uniting with his wife
Martha Careful (14-Apr) : The manner in which he won it was just amazing and wonderful. First blowing the lead then getting back, then blowing it. But ultimately
Zero2Cool (12-Apr) : I'm guessing since the thumb was broken, he wasn't feeling it.
dfosterf (10-Apr) : Looking for guidance. Not feeling the thumb.
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : If they knew about it or not
Mucky Tundra (10-Apr) : I don't recall that he did which is why I asked.
