Ty Montgomery is arguably the Packers’ biggest mystery.
A year ago, he went from the team’s featured running back to being forgotten when rookies Jamaal Williams and Aaron Jones ran with their opportunity by showcasing a burst, wiggle and power that wasn’t present with Montgomery.
So what to do with a guy that transformed his body into a muscled Humvee? You turn him into a tight end.
This will be Monty’s fourth season and another position switch will be his third. That’s a big ask for a guy that was drafted as a wide receiver out of Stanford in the third round in 2015.
But Montgomery is the ultimate X-factor: he doesn’t have a selfish bone in his body and is writing a manual on how to be the perfect player. He could’ve complained about changing his position to running back, but that didn’t happen. Heck, he even went to coach Mike McCarthy and suggested being the running back. How many guys would not only propose that but also go along with it by transforming their body with added bulk to take more of a pounding? The answer is not many.
“I ask a lot of questions. I’ve always been that way, said Montgomery during his rookie training camp. “I want to make sure I understand everything and I want to understand why everything is the way it is.”
Montgomery is a breath of fresh air in an era of look-at-me touchdown charades and guys demanding that they get the ball.
Tight end would be the final move for Montgomery. It fills a desperate need for the Packers after the absence of Martellus Bennett, who went completely sideways last year.
And it will also save the Packers anywhere from $4-$7 million over the next three years if they chose to get Austin Seferian-Jenkins or Jimmy Graham in free agency.
The best reason is that Montgomery already has a connection with Aaron Rodgers. He has good hands and will put to use his 18 broke tackles from 2016 because a lot of his routes will be ran in traffic.
The only question mark will be Montgomery’s blocking ability. He will be called on to block a lot more near the goal line and in short yardage situations.
But that shouldn’t be a deal breaker. He can stretch the seam, which would open things up for the receivers on the outside. Basically, it would make an already potent offense nearly unstoppable.
When Jared Cook was in Green Bay a couple years ago, it was proven how much smoother things operated when the offense had spacing. Receivers knew they had room and because of the respect for Rodgers, the running backs also got plenty of opportunities in the running game as well.
Montgomery is searching for a role on this team. He’s too good of a player and too good of a teammate to collect dust. He is the sparkplug that can lift the entire locker room because of the sacrifices that he’s made.
Everyone knows how hard he has worked to switch positions once. His teammates will have his back when he does it again.

I was not a fan of Ty as a RB. I just don't think he would be a long term solution. But I admire the man. I love the quote "he doesn’t have a selfish bone in his body". Give me a whole team of guys like this.

Yup...and he has talent. I bet he COULD play tight end.
Vince Lombardi was great at that. Taking players and having them learn other positions that fit their talents.
He made some offensive guys become defensive players where they thrived.
Ty has the size and the ability to play as a WR and a RB, so why not give him a shot at TE?

I don't know how this would work, really.

I haven't seen anything that makes me believe he has the frame to put on another 25 pounds. He ran a 4.55 at the Combine at 220lbs, with many thinking it was on the slow side because he put on too muscle. He's only 6'0, which means he doesn't have any height advantage at all and that he would be one of the smallest TEs in the league. He can't really block as well as you'd like out of your tight end, which is pretty logical, being a WR and all for most of his career.

His strength has always been that he's an athlete. A guy you can rotate between slot receiver, scat back, special teamer and returner. You lose all of that if you force him to put on a big amount of weight. And in the end you'll be stuck with a not-very-good tight end.

Tight ends who are mismatches are just that because they're too big and tall to be covered by corners, but too fast and athletic to be covered by linebackers. They're freaks of nature, rather than guys who are build like wide receivers, but just put on another 40 pounds.

Either keep him at RB or move him back to WR. You are going to waste his talents for another year while he gets used to a new position? I know TE may not be all that much different than WR and the blocking scheme may be somewhat familiar to him as a RB and I know he is a smart guy but for crying out loud let the man learn a position and play it. He is not big enough for any other offensive positions so what's next? DB?

I'm not one that can say where GB's next great TE will come from, but I have at least 1 player in mind that I believe would be a good fit. I'll not jinx that fit with this post, but I will be watching this player during this off season.

I believe that a lot of NFL business is being delayed as the Kirk Cousins auction remains unresolved. It appears at this time that the NYJ's and the Vikings are the final bidders for his services. Following that, a flood of deals will take place. Rodgers new contract will then be resolved, and GB will have a better idea of how to manage, deal, and trade and remain within their 2018 Budget. A deal for a TE may then be possible, maybe.

Jordy's our interim TE. He's a little taller and he can block better than Richard Rodgers. Long as his straight line speed doesn't fall below 4.8, he should be able to get down the seam on occasion.

Smokey is right, Montgomery doesn't have the physical stature to play tight end.
I certainly wouldn't want to see Jordy switch positions either.
If we're going to have a player switch positions to play tight end, I would like them to try Jeff Janis.

If you wanna switch a guy, maybe look at Biegel. Possibly Fackrell too.

You guys are probably right. I was just trying to figure out how to keep him (and his talent) on the field for us.

Being a TE isn't going to make him healthier, which is the only thing keeping him from being a good WR or RB. A move like that makes no sense at all.
