Mike McCarthy was the bridge over troubled waters and nothing more. The org was worried about too much change. I've heard the word "stability". LOL. Mike McCarthy is their attempt at keeping a semblance of it.
Bob McGinn gave a look at what happened and why. It's amazing how so many dismiss this because Bob wasn't the typical organizational cheerleader and ear tickler like so many are accustomed to. A board member confirmed that Murphy was given the suggestion to move on from Ted. It was not stated as to the why, but I believe McGinn that it was for what I've been saying for a few years.
The decline was too hard to hide any longer especially with the SNF thing. I'm sure the org knew that it would happen soon that they would be forced into action.
Mike McCarthy had to be extended to give the appearance of him not being lame duck which he still is. The appearance is gone creating a more inviting environment to attract a DC. In fact, a confident DC may just feel that the job might be his next year or the year after so we might get a really good one not Darren Perry or Winston Moss.
Would love to know the exact time they decided to extend MM. It wasn't prior to the season. The bumbling Murphy said it was "weeks ago". I'm guessing this happened right after Dorsey chose Cleveland. Did Dorsey spurn Murphy in favor of Cleveland? Now, that would be a story. It might be true. Dorsey looks at the roster and sees it's better overall minus 12 and has two picks in the top 4 picks to get his QB. Plus, Dorsey may not have wanted to fire MM. I really wish we knew when this happened but my money is Mike McCarthy was extended right after Dorsey took the Browns job which not coincidentally was "weeks ago". If they thought they had Dorsey and were left holding the bag, which they very well could be, this is a nightmare scenario. Now, Highsmith is gone...Alonzo may have thought John was coming here and now that he wasn't he's going there.
There are lots of what ifs...like maybe Dorsey didn't want to step on any of the guys who waited around for Ted to retire? May have caused a lot of friction and caused guys to jump ship.
This all should've been done years ago during an offseason where it was all planned out. I smile that Barfarn says everything is just as it should be at 1265. I think all of us know that not to be true. It doesn't smell right or feel right at all because it isn't. I hope Bob can add more to this story that is truly engrossing.
Ted Thompson sits on his hands per former GM: "because they’ve had 25 fricking years of great quarterbacks. Of course it works. Try it without a special quarterback."
