Davante Adams isn't playing this week, and the Packers aren't playing for anything. But they're not playing around. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Packers are giving the young wide receiver a long-term contract extension which will be worth around $14 million a year. The deal will reportedly be for four or five years, [more]

It's rumored to be a four year extension worth $58 million ($14.5 million per year). Which would make Adams the 4th highest paid WR in the NFL behind only Antonio Brown, DeAndre Hopkins and A.J. Green.

So Adams is now going to be paid more than Julio Jones (among others)

And the general reaction is great, but Packers are spending too much money on their WRs, so this might lead to bad news for Nelson or Cobb.

Bye Cobb. Bye clay. Hello Janis. Hello 2nd round WR. Hello jordy restructuring. Hello Rodgers restructuring. I get we are going to make alot of cap moves this year to make this ok, but this is an awful contract. Look at what Adam Thielen signed for.

Good move. I could see Packers ditching Cobb and Nelson. Before this year I was thinking we’d ditch Nelson and keep Cobb, but with Cobb virtually disappearing this year he’s a bit of an unknown. We do need a #2 though, so I guess we’ll see if we draft a high-round WR or pass catching TE.

I agree he had to be resigned but that kind of money is total nonsense.
We could be looking at another Sam Shields.
But we don’t know all the details yet.

By not allowing Davante to go to FA allows The Packers to spread those out an extra year .

I'm not going to go all knee jerk on what else will happen.
Just going sit back and watch it happen
Changes are on the way. How big or small?
We will start finding out Monday.

  • high average is a negative aspect... as you get less money to spend else where
  • low guarantee is good for any possible type of early release (ie injury, bad characters, not living up to the contract)
  • BUT
• Packers have never really released guys for not living up to their contract
  • Packers know Adams is a good character (as far as I know)

• So high average and low guarantee only makes sense if you're worried about injury.... or if the team is going to start releasing people that aren't living up to their contract (or threaten it, to get said player to renegotiation their current contracts... but that only works if you're willing to follow through some of the time it doesn't work).

If you're not going to force renegotiation or release of player that aren't playing up to that level... then I'd want lower averages... that way you got more money to spread around, and if it meant higher guarantees, then so be it... the team hasn't been willing to release guys anyways, so it's practical guaranteed anyways (other than injury and/or failing to make the top 53).

Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
