Do you want Shields back?

Sam Shields said he's still dealing with a concussion sustained in Week 1.

He said he’s still dealing with the aftereffects of that concussion – the fourth of his professional career.
“Some days it’s tough headaches, some days it’s mild,” Shields said in the bowels of the Georgia Dome near the Packers’ locker room after the game. “It varies. I never know. I’m so used to it that it’s just normal. Each day it’s getting better. I’ll be back."

And that’s his intention – coming back.
“I’m thinking it’s not over,” Shields said. “I’ve still got more in me. But I’m going through this, what I’ve got to go through. Just take it one day at a time.”

Why risk himself and the possibility of another serious head injury?

“I understand why you ask that,” Shields said. “I don’t know. I just love the game, man, and I feel that I can get back out there and play. If not, then not. But right now it’s just day by day.”

I love a feel-good redemption story as much as the next man, but I'd rather it were another team that took a gamble on Shields. The Packers need to find someone who can contribute out of the gate and hopefully remain reliable. When it comes to players, I don't live in the past.

Considering he has historically posted using the @packers Twitter account, I doubt he runs his own feed. Out of curiosity, what kind of advice would you be giving him?

You could call the Packers Administration office and ask them to forward your message. Here's their phone number (920) 569-7301.

Shields should be given the opportunity to compete for a 2017 Roster spot . If he makes the grade, then they can talk contract.

I would like to see a new GM and a new DC that will be fully dedicated to a new motto , Defense Rules !

[cheers]

Even if he gets healthy and cleared to play there's no reason to expect him to last very long in season. It sucks because when healthy he was working his way into the top 10-15 range of CBs after being undrafted but even if he wants to risk his health it's not really worth it for a team to risk the investment.

If cleared and completely healthy, the Packers should strongly consider giving him a chance. Renegotiate his contract to be incentive-based, and address the CB position like Shields won't actually contribute. Shields could come back and play well and never have another concussion. If everything looks OK medically, then give him an incentive-based chance that is low-risk, high-reward for the Packers.
