Woodson was signed rather late in free agency and he was an expensive acquisition at the time.

You people that are overly anxious to spend money just are not thinking.

Free agency is much like a game of musical chairs. After a few players are gone those teams with spots (the chairs of musical chairs) have a great advantage at the negotiating table.

The only guy interesting to date was Canty and the Packers were not a immediate destination as the guy wanted to stay in his division.

When all the other have blown their money Ted will be able to swing plenty of deals.

Why spend for spending sake?? This is investing.

My goodness. This thread has 50 responses and 497 reads. More than any thread in the last while here on Packers Home.

You should ban the ass-holes who need useless whining and bitching for their entertainment.

Many people perfer the thread topics that get 4 responses.

I know I love a thread that has 3 responses. It is a much easier read.

I'm all for the criticism of Ted Thompson when he deserves it and he deserves it with what happen with Chris Canty in my opinion. I get that they wanted to see him first, but you can still give the agent a rough idea of what's going on and at least talk to him which Thompson did neither or so it appears.

With that said I think we need to look on the bright side here. As I said in a other post that the Packers aren't usually this active early on so it's even rare that we're talking about GB missing out on a free agent. Now it appears the Packers are interested in Igor Olshansky who is 6-6 and 300 pounds and is a good fit for this defense.

My point is the team is being active and hopefully Igor Olshansky is brought in and signs a deal similar to the one that Seattle gave Colin Cole because I think Olshansky is a starter on this defense if signed.

I have no opinion on the Canty situation. I will reserve judgement on any off season moves until the actual games start. It we have another losing season, then Thompson made the wrong moves. If we win, he was right. Its really that simple.

One aspect of the competition for Chris Canty's services hasn't been addressed in the multiple threads I have read to this point. The Giants appear to be a perfect fit ON THE FIELD for him. All things being equal, who wouldn't want to be a part of that defensive line? We can all sit here and collectively wring our hands over the ambient temperatures in Green Bay, the relative size of the fanbase, the friggin' quality of the restaurants and bars in Brown county, Ted Thompson's reputation as a tightwad, yada, yada yada.

With the signing of Rocky Benard, I was hopeful that it would lessen the Giant's ability/desire to get Chris Canty, but understood that if anything, it would make them more appealing to Canty from the pure football aspect, and the "keeping up with the Joneses" has to be factored in from the Giants viewpoint.

Everyone is so very hair-trigger when it comes to free agency and Ted. Frankly, he is part of the solution, not part of the problem. How can everyone sit here and applaud the Green Bay Packers for not raising ticket prices when assholes like Dan Snyder are out there playing checkbook management. There is a cause and effect every single time a free agent is signed, and when a defensive tackle with questionable morals and work ethic gets all that money, it trickles into every market/team.

For example, Colin Cole does not deserve more money than Ryan Pickett. Period. That is what he got, though. Why? Go ask Dan Snyder, not Ted Thompson.

Edit:

Hey Ted...make Dan pay, literally...5th round pick...

This would be fun, we could possibly stick it to boy wonder:

Canty is too overrated. The only reason I would of wanted him to sign here was due to his experience and knowledge in the 3-4. Either then that he brings nothing to the team.

I don't think an opinion can be made here yet Porky. We simply don't know what transpired and the reporting is all over the board on this. My guess is Canty's agent knew full well the Packers were prepared to pay the most money regardless of whether or not an actual figure was thrown out there.
My guess is Ted Thompson did everything he could to convince the agent not to sign in NY until GB got a shot. I think other factors Canty was looking for overrode the bottom line cash part of this deal. It would make no sense NOT to come to GB and leverage the two parties unless the collective basket of everything the player is looking for greatly favored one side.

Are we really up in arm's over missing out on Canty and losing Cole? Seriously.

I see it is going to be another year of every time a player is linked to Green Bay, and we don't ultimately sign them, that we have failed and the 09 season is shot.

Canty is a nice player, no doubt, but he wasn't that productive in the 3-4 to get all wound up about. What he has about 10 sacks in 4 years, and play decent against the run but wasn't dominate and could get rooted out. 17.5 Million guaranteed is a little steep IMO, yes the Skins blew up the market this season early, but I say relax a little and let some of these heavy moves trickle the next round of action.. which will be teams cutting other players to gain cap room. The market isn't bare.. not in the least.

Solid player, not exceptional getting paid a premium dollar.. yet we are suppose to met those numbers without a visit to Green Bay.. not wise business.

Cole.. sorry all, but the Packers offered him a fair contract late last season, he spurned it and hit the open waters.. he was a good rotational player, but not much beyond the high effort he put forth. Didn't want to lose him, but in the big picture, not overly tragic either.

Big picture, the market has been a little crazy again.. the Haynesworth deal will take a week or two to rub off.. the money is going to fizzle very soon. The wise dollar will be diligent especially this season, let the market settle a little bit. Let some of these moves sink in on these teams and more players will become available as a little time passes.

How late in the offseason did we ink Woodson again?

The Packers, apparently, were willing to beat the offer by the Giants, BUT, they expressed to the agent that they wanted Canty to complete a physical before the number was finalized.

I have NO problem with the Packers passing on a guy when his agent does not want the tem to inspect their investment, prior to doling out the cash.

Giants beat Pack to Canty punch
Now that Chris Canty has signed a six-year, $42 million deal with the Giants, a contract that includes $17.25 million guaranteed in the first two years, here's something to keep in mind: The ex-Cowboys defensive lineman is now better paid than all three of New York's top three defensive ends, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka.

Tuck signed a five-year, $30 million contact that included $16 million of guarantees in January 2008. While Kiwanuka is still working under his relatively modest rookie contract, it's Umenyiora who might have the most unfavorable reaction to Canty's new deal. Umenyiora, who missed all of last season with a left knee injury, is still under the six-year, almost $41 million deal he signed in December 2005. That contract runs through 2012, and includes $15 million of guarantees, but the marketplace has since rendered it a bit out of date. It's expected that Umenyiora will ask the Giants to renegotiate his deal if he has a big comeback season in 2009.

Canty was prepared to leave the Giants complex and fly to Green Bay for a free-agent visit Sunday night -- if New York didn't hit the $7 million per year average that he was seeking. According to a league source I talked with, the Packers weren't scared off at all by the $7 million average salary and would have likely topped New York's offer. But Green Bay, which is switching to the 3-4 defense this year, wanted Canty to come to town and meet the coaching staff before negotiations began in earnest.

The Packers viewed Canty as the best 3-4 end available in free agency, but they traditionally move slow in free agency and weren't prepared to compete with the Giants' offer in negotiations over the phone. But early Friday morning, after the start of free agency, Canty was almost certain he was going to sign with Washington, only to see the Redskins take their deal off the table when they locked up Albert Haynesworth around 5 a.m. Canty had been offered $18 million guaranteed by the Redskins, and he wasn't eager to visit Green Bay if it involved the risk of potentially losing the Giants' deal in the process.

After Haynesworth, Canty and ex-Arizona defensive end Antonio Smith, who signed a five-year, $35 million deal with Houston on Saturday, are the only two free-agent defensive linemen who reached the $7 million average in salary this weekend. -- Don Banks (6:29 p.m. ET)
